Opt Out!!! This link was buried in the Suggestions/Comments forum posted by gwtamara (garden web official)...

I never even knew about it!!

Go enter your e-mail address that is registered with GW...if you have more than one enter them all (one at a time).

Webby, thanks for the info. I looked into it, but what I was mentioning before was about the pop ups. What the opt out does, I think after my first sift thru session, is allow you reject any news, advertising emails, etc. that results from the personal information that was gathered when you register. I want to know how to turn off all cookies from this site. They are very slick in positioning them on the screen so that when you want to click on a forum, the pop up is activated, using up resources and your sound. I read under the Cookies explanation on the link you gave that says:

"Our site uses a feature of your browser to set a "cookie" on your computer. Cookies are small packets of information that a site's computer stores on your computer. The iVillage Network can then read the cookies whenever you visit the iVillage websites. We use cookies to save your password so you don't have to re-enter it each time you visit our site, TO DELIVER CONTENT SPECIFIC TO YOUR INTERESTS, to track the pages you've visited and to make sure you don't see the same ads repeatedly. These cookies allow us to use the information we collect to customize your iVillage experience so that your visit to iVillage is as relevant and as valuable to you as possible."

The capitalized part means that somehow when you post, it's as if there is a library kept somewhere of what words you type, and then a pop up (from their multitude of advertisers) will start to appear that is "specific to your interests" and "These cookies allow us to use the information we collect to customize your iVillage experience so that your visit to iVillage is as relevant and as valuable to you as possible." (ergo, key words are recorded when you type and a relevent pop up is found just for you.) Does this sound possible?

When I first joined the forum, I never got the pop ups, but when I started replying and posting, it seems that strange pop ups started to plague me. Like when I posted about the dog in my yard, suddenly Iams dog food pop ups. When I posted about spiders, poof! home insect repellent pop ups. Does anyone else notice this? Or have I just been re-reading 1984?

Absolutely that is possible...probably from a compilation of all of the posts on the page at that time....and before I had my new browser, I notice the same thing...

I now have Firefox and followed the directions (in the link I left on your Iams post...) that Fratelli gave...worked like a charm...I am now AD FREE!!!! And the speed has improved tremendously!!!
I HIGHLY recommend it, DBD.

For those who may not understand why you should opt out now:

It is for opting out of having your e-mail addy shared with iVillage's "affiliates" ....

From their privacy policy:

"At any time, you can opt out of having your personally identifiable information shared with our Affiliates for their direct marketing purposes."

It is like entering your e-mail addy to a "do not call list".

And, since we are now merging with iVillage's system, now is the time to do it....

You should be able to upgrade Adblock Plus w/o upgrading all of FF. Worth a try. lower risk of any problems and very quick to see. Best to close FF and re-open just in case afterwards. A new Adblock+Easylist may fix your intellinks. hard to say for sure. I didn't use FIreshot that time for the screenshot. sometimes I do. I discovered a cool feature of Picasa 3 (desktop app). If Picasa3 is open while I do Alt-PrintScreen, it automagically captures it to a "Screen Captures" folder with a little systray popup that says "screenshot captured. click here to view". Then I save as a JPG and FireFTP it to my webspace. Its a little faster than FireShot. FireShot has other features though that Picasa does not have. choices, choices, choices... I never have uninstalled the old browser. See if you can Update FF right from inside FF under Help/Update. Thats generally preferred method. If not, you can just download the latest from FF and run it. It should take care of putting it in a new place and give you a new shortcut to get to it. There may be Apple/Windows diffs here that I am not aware of, so YMMV. The "profile" is just a collection of files in a special place about things you have done to customize your usage of the browser. If you get a new FF version, the new browser looks at your old profile so it sets it up the same as you had it. (as best it can LOL) Its in a different place than the browser. If you can find your bookmarks.html file just copy it somewhere else for safekeeping. But this should not be necessaryy. It will probably be fine.

For those who are reading this thread and are unsure about cookies, 99.9% of the time cookies are not evil. In this case they are just behavioral miners for commercial purposes and are really anything to fret. The exact same concept often happens when you make an in-person purchase at many stores when using your credit or debit card. However, if you are unsure or wish to shore up your privacy, how limited it might be when doing anything nowadays , this would be a tool to use. Remember, "The sky is not falling". DA

Unless something has changed (and they change everytime you turn around) she is not supposed to see a person with Medicare unless she files for them. I am very interested in what happens. Please keep us posted. I think we are going to see more and more doctors deciding to go this route. Medicare is just not paying enough and the other patients have to be charged more to make up the difference. I did a cost factor study for my son's practice and for the time involved, staff time, supplies and record keeping, billing, etc. It was an eye opening experience! I guess that about all you can do is to send the form to the secondary carrier. My bet is that if your policy is set up so that they are supposed to pay the 20% after Medicare pays the approved amount, that's all they will pay....and maybe not even that if Medicare isn't filed. If finances are a problem, you might think about finding another doctor.

"Accepting Assignment" has to do with how the payment is made. If the doctor Accepts Assignment, he accepts a lower approved amount in return for getting the check made out to him and sent directly to his office. The patient is then billed only for the 20% balance. If he does NOT Accept Assignment, the approved amount is a little more and the check is made out to the patient and is sent to the patient. The doctor bills the patient directly for the full APPROVED amount. You should never pay a doctor before you know what Medicare will approve as it often changes. If you overpay, you may never know that the doctor is carrying a credit balance on your account. It's not the doctor's fault, it's more the fault of the insurance clerk or the office manager. A doctor has to apply for a Medicare number and be approved to see Medicare patients. And he MUST bill for ALL of them. To opt out means that he agrees NOT TO SEE MEDICARE PATIENTS, as he cannot bill either them or medicare for the service. At least that was the way it worked a few years ago. I don't think it has changed. He can't bill for just some of his medicare patients. He has to bill Medicare for ALL of them. He may accept assignment on some of them, and refuse assignment on others, but he has to bill Medicare for all of them, and he has to accept the approved amount as the entire charge and write off the unapproved amount. For example. Let's say that the usual fee for a service is $50.00. Medicare might approve it for 25.00. If he accepts assignment, the 80% (20.00) goes directly to him. If he doesn't accept assignment, Medicare may approve it for a little more, maybe for 28.00. 80% of 28.00 is 22.40, the patient gets a check for the 22.40 and the doctor can then bill for the entire 28.00. But NOT for the full amount of 50.00 A doctor that no longer wants to see (and accept Medicare terms) may opt out of the program. I think we may not be talking about the same thing when we speak of Opting Out of the program. It's not the same thing as not accepting assignment. As far as what it means to your pocket book, that's another thing. The approved amount may be 25.00 today, and Medicare may change it to 18.00 tomorrow or 26.00 at another doctor's office. I think that sometimes it depends on how fancy and detailed the diagnosis is. High Blood Pressure gets X amount of dollars, If the doctor also adds that you have rhinitis ( a runny nose)the approved amount might be more. It would depend on who was handling the claim. Dealing with Medicare and it's thousands rules and regulations is a royal pain in the you-know-what. I expect that more and more doctors with full patient loads will be opting out. They don't need the hassle. That means that the over 65 patient will be seeing the doctor that hasn't built up a good practice yet.
