Yes, that is a Red-bellied Woodpecker..a male to be exact. A female would not have red on top of the head, only on the back of the head/neck.

It's definitely a red belly. I saw one once but it doesn't frequent my feeders.

Love those guys! Red-bellies usually only come around during nesting season but been seeing an unusually colored male at the feeder lately.

Because my Canon 40D does poorly in low light and my feeders hang under the eaves on the north side of the house I usually don't bother to photograph my feeder birds.

I have Red Bellied Woodpeckers and Downey Woodpeckers in my yard almost daily and on occasionally we see Red Headed Woodpeckers and Hairy Woodpeckers, although I have not yet been fortunate enough to get photos of the later two.

I am attaching a photo of a Red bellied Woodpecker on the side of our Maple tree as well as another shot of it on the suet feeder.

I am also attaching a photo of the Downey Woodpecker on the suet feeder to give a comparison of their physical size. To offer a reference for size, the mesh of the suet feeder is 1/2" squares.

These woodpeckers are all common where I live, but this is the only one that I have seen at the cat food feeder. I know that there are yellow bellied sapsuckers in this area, too, and I may have seen one years ago but I just wanted to make sure of the ID. Checking on Google I see that the Yellow Bellied looks nothing like the Red Bellied, but darned if that will stick in my mind for too long! We also have the pleasure of the company of Pileateds but I have not been able to take a good photo of those guys. They are awesome.
