Snowy Egrets

November 10th. I was in the middle of a drive out to pick up a check so I could shop for our church soup kitchen. I was harried, rushed and feeling a bit stressed.....as I passed Pudding Creek, I noticed a lone Snowy Egret along the side of the creek so I thought, "What the heck," and drove down and parked. I'd brought my camera with me, hoping for a good shot or two.....as I crept closer, the egret was joined by a second. Both appear to be juveniles:

Probably a little blue heron. In real life they look very dark all over, not the reddish purple in the field guides.

Genealogy is another of my interests. I've been at it 40 years and have almost 15,000 names in my file at http://www.perilloux.org/family/origin.htm Unfortunately, because of the French Revolution, WW1 and WW2, I was only able to trace my French ancestry back only to the early 1700s. Here is a photo from sometime before December 1877, taken with an unknown camera type. Looks like something out of the wild west, but it was in Louisiana.

Thanks, everyone. Seeing these two together reminded me of an Audubon Bird Field Trip we took to Santa Barbara when I was either in the third grade or the fifth grade. There was an observation deck behind two way glass where we could watch the Snowy Egrets raising their young in a rookery that was tucked within a eucalyptus grove (of all places!).....without being seen by them and therefore disturbing them. It made such an impression on me - and is one of several reasons I have loved birds all of my life .... yes, this moment (merely several small moments in one day), was a certain stress-reliever and I left feeling better about getting the shopping done and setting up for our soup kitchen :)

These are beautiful -- aren't you glad you had your camera with you? The first is my favorite.
