they are basically a rocky mountain and west coast mountain woodpecker. they seem to prefer areas where there are lots of dead trees and in good weather eat bugs and worms and beetles and ants. there a thousands of acres of dead or dying trees in the mountains around here due to forest fires and beetle kill and fungus problems they stay in the higher mountains summers but in winter the lower elevations and canyons. i have been lucky to have them nest in dead trees here in spring and head to the pines and spruce forests in summer. They seem to eat mostly suet mixes and cracked corn and nuts in winter from the feeders. Not endangered but rare to see them vary often.

You really do get some cool birds at your house. Thanks for sharing them with us! I have never seen a Woodpecker at a nectar feeder.~~Angie

What luck!! Thanks for posting the image.

I've never seen one of those before! I didn't know they liked fruits so much, so I'll have to put some out for mine. I mostly get downy, red-headed, pileated, and hairy.
