need help ID wasp/bee

ok it is the same one as my older post:

it is small, the size of a skipper

alternately red/orange and yellow overall

nectaring on lantana

the wings are long and narrow, held 45 degrees, almost never over back

the abdomen is a little stalked, red/orange with 5 or 6 yellow rings close together posteriorly and one ring near stalk, abdomen sometimes cocked?

femur is dark, tibia is pale(yellow)

antennae looked normal length

sry havo no camera that can focus that close, can someone recommend an inexpensive point-and-shoot digital that can take good macro pics?

also saw a week ago a small metallic blue one too,with metallic green dorsally and laterally, any idea what that was? same size

i line in plano, collin co. TX

I have a Kodak Easyshare CX6230 which can get as close as 5 inches from a subject, but no closer. It also has optical zoom which gets you a little closer, but as with any zoom used without a tripod, any shaking, breathing, even your pulse, can make the image blurry.

Cost was about $140 in 2004.

I found a nest under the overhang of my front door. It is a wee bit smaller than a tennis ball and I am quite sure it is not a bumble bee hive. It is grey in colour, and there about 4 wasps/hornets/?? working away. One is a bit larger than the rest. The question I have, is what are they.... they are unlike anything I have seen and cannot find any pics of them on the web. The have a slender body like a wasp but no stripes. Including the head, about 85% of them are black, the only colour is a few dots on the head and about 1 quarter of the tail/end of the body has the same dots,there are DEFINATELY no stripes. The spots are either white or light yellow.... has anyone seen anything like this? Cheers

Either bald-faced hornets or the sort of yellowjackets which make aerial nests. In either case, it looks as if it's high enough to be out of the way, thus not a problem. If so, you can leave it be until the colony dies, most likely by November or December. At that time you can either remove the nest or leave it be. In the latter instance, the nest will gradually disintegrate.

Philip Hulse, this is an ancient thread, the OP might not answer. watch it for a while and see what flies in/out? if you're worried about what they are, or if they're burrowing into an inconvenient location, try finding a bee expert (not pest control, but somebody who knows about bees). nextdoor or local neighborhood facebook groups might be able to help you locate one in your area. they can help you determine what it is and if it's bees, safely move them w/o killing them. if they determine it's something more nefarious, then you may need to consider an exterminator. then patch / cover up holes so nothing else tries to move in. at least you don't have this situation! https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/01/us/bees-car-new-mexico.html
