My son took this picture from his deck in Southern Ontario. I think it is a sharp-shinned hawk. Right?

It's a juvenile Cooper's Hawk..great shot!

Yup, looks like an immature (juvenile), probably first-year, Cooper's Hawk. Those definitive tear-dropped shaped brown breast markings are a clincher, as well as the thickness of the legs.

jannd, I should have given the information I usually give with the picture. In most, if not all, species of the birds of prey, the female is larger then the male. Sharpie males are about 10"- females 14". Cooper's males are 14"- females 21". A 14" male Coop is the same size as a 14" female Sharpie. The side by side picture is made from pictures on the same fence with one picture manipulated to make the board the same width as the other. That makes the birds to scale to one another. As you can see, they are for all practical purposes, the same size. The real size difference is between the male Sharpie and a female Coop. We hope to get a picture of them on the fence for a side by side of all 4. Hope this is of help, Bob

Thanks for the feedback. I was sitting at my kitchen table when I heard the birds call out and scatter in every direction. I was able to take pictures through my kitchen window of the hawk as he narrowed in on his prey. One of the cardinals hit the window and landed underneath the deck furniture.

Thanks! So when do their tails get the reddish plumage? This one had brown striped tail feathers, I thought that the adults had red tails but I know very little about red tailed hawks so I thought I would ask, thanks! Oh, also, what's that whistling noise that it is making? There is a redtailed hawk couple that lives in my area, I used To see them Together all the time, now they seem to be hanging out solo mostly, I wondered if this one might be one of their "kids" from this year or year before, this one's plumage looks a lot darker than the male and female I usually see in the area.

Also, the head is not as bullet shaped as a Sharpie.

Yes, young Cooper's. Cornell Website has a nice accipeter identification page. Cooper's exhibit the heaviest part of the body in the breast, sharp shinned has a lower center of gravity. We had a juvie Cooper's last year and he is still here this winter, along with a very large, very beautiful female who has included our property in her hunting area. They stop and check our feeders out daily.
