White-winged Dove in MA

This has been a winter of rare birds for me, first a Dickcissel in late November and then a White-winged Dove on December 20 during a major snowstorm.

A very unhappy, probably very cold White-winged Dove. The identification has been confirmed by all sorts of bird gurus within email reach. It turns out that the dove population is steadily moving north, and 3 or 4 have been seen in MA this year.

Dec. 20, 2009 It was an awful, stormy night and my feet are cold and wet, and I don't want to stand in the snow! I want to go somewhere warm!

The dove may be racing south down the Atlantic Seaboard right now; I haven't seen it since that day.

Wow, that sure does look like a white winged dove.Great picture, (in spite of the weather conditions..lol!) you can even see the blue eye ring. That poor thing is way out of it's range....supposedly they prefer tropical regions, but some stragglers have found themselves way further north even up into Canada!

It's quite interesting, to see how ranges expand......perhaps in a few years they will become commonplace visitors and it will seem strange that a single white winged dove in Ma was a such a foreign occurrance!

Great that you had your camera ready and got a picture of it. That's quite a sighting.

I must be in a hot spot, there are a dozen or more of these doves at a time and the cooing in the evening comes from every direction. They are the first to arrive in the morning and the last visitors of the evenng. Funny thing, I first hung the feeder from a 2X4 propped in the V of the twin trunks of our River Birch, the squirrels had a field day. A couple evenings ago I got fed up and went to Home Depot and bought a 2" PVC pipe and elbow and hung the feeder out of squirrel reach. You should see the squirrel run and jump/climb half way up only to slide back down fireman style. He then began digging at the base and doing flips and chasing his tail, maybe out of frustration. He now joins the birds on the ground for the spillage and eyes the feeder from time to time. As I type this he is on the tree trunk staring at the feeder, seems to be judging if he can make the 10 foot leap.

White Dove and Dune White have very similar LRVs, so they will be very slightly different - enough to just look like a mismatch probably. If you don't want any contrast, just paint the walls Dove White in matte. The difference in sheen means the cabinets and walls won't look identical, but they won't clash at all. If you want some contrast between the wall color and cabinet color you should be looking for a color that is at least ten points different in LRV. While other factors besides LRV matter for contrast, I've just found that anything less than ten isn't very noticeable. As several of the other commenters mentioned earlier, Pale Oak is a nice color and could be a possibility for you, or Winds Breath or Ballet White. My living room is Pale Oak and I sampled the other two before choosing it. I have strong southern light in that room.

Used BM Dove Wing a few weeks ago in a bedroom & bath. I love it. It turned out lighter than how it appears on the small paint sample. It has a soft white appearance that does not lean pink or yellow to me. I think it has a very very very light tan/tanish grey look to it. Even with the tan/grey look, I think of it as a "white". It came out looking how I had hoped it would. I used the BM "regal select" product, two coats. I used the same color everywhere (walls & wood). Flat on the walls, semi-gloss on the wood and on bathroom walls.

I think Dove Wing looks very nice in your light filled home! Leave it and accept the fact that you will most likely have this effect with any paint color! Your home is flooded with light; the ceilings are high, the rooms are open, you have skylights! Rejoice in the beauty of all that light! Or cover your windows, close up the skylights and dim the lighting! 🤷🏼‍♀️once you finish furnishing your home you won’t be noticing these variations in color.

Very cool Claire. You do get some interesting birds down there on the coast. Was it a PFW count day?

jiggreen: When I was a kid growing up in MA, there were no cardinals, or carolina wrens, or tufted titmice. Now they're commonplace.

There are lovely stories, apparently verified, of the first flocks of tufted titmice flying across the Cape Cod Canal by crossing the bridges, flying from girder to girder. Supposedly they hate to fly across water.

kendra and terrene: That wasn't a normal PFW count day, but I'm doing the PFW gender study, so I was looking out more often, and I always have my camera nearby. I reported the dove to PFW separately and they confirmed the identification as a rare bird for my area.
