What kind of Bee???

We have bees flying close to the ground in large groups. They are smallish, skinny & about 3/4 inch long. They are black with dark red hind section. They are fast moving & usually dart about just above the grass. Although, they were in my Tomato plants as well as the butterfly bush. I don't think they are a wasp or a hornet, but, not sure! They don't sit long enough for me to take a picture of it. Any ideas of what this could bee?? ;)

Sounds very much like a type of mud dauber wasp. If so, their hovering and ground skimming behavior is when they are hunting for spiders and caterpillars to cache away for their eggs to eat when the eggs hatch.

I don't think it's a bee I've seen, it's not a honey bee, some sort of native bee or wasp/hornet a couple more picture might help.

By night, I meant around 7:00 PM, so it was still pretty light out. I saw it again 2 days ago, just a quick glimpse of it as it flies away very fast if it sees me.

Thanks! The flowers came volunteer from the seed of an ornamental Sunflower we had last year. Giant stalk with multiple headed plant, already seeing the Gold Finches eating seeds from the mature heads. I'm still thinking Melissodes trinodis for the bee. There have been numerous ones with the long antennae working the flowers.
