White Breasted Nuthatch

We are feeding the birds again. I haven't put up the tube feeder outside the kitchen window, but will as soon as I buy thistle seed.

WOW lucky! I have never had Nuthatches nest in a box. I do have a pair that nests in the same hole high in a tree every year. It's a little early for Goldfinches to start nesting yet but Cardinals should have babies flying soon! : )

There isn't any waste with the sunflower seed heads. I especially like that. Two weeks can pass w/o the need to change them. Tom, good point. I'll keep that in mind. I don't think I'd of thought that. I grew 500 sunflowers this year and I'm bumping that up to 2000 at least for next year. Having a lot of land surely helps. Best Regards, Dax

the roost boxes are for the birds to roost in in bad weather and snow and cold. but even in good weather with palm trees and no real cold the birds roost where they are at least somewhat protected from weather such as rain or wind. as lisa said the hole is high on the front which means that in spring when the young first hatch and start to fledge they can not climb or fly very good and the inside of the box should be rough such as rough sawn wood or scored for grip and the hole being lower down makes it a lot easier to get out. Hanging in a tree is a problem if you have snakes or squirrels or racoons that might endanger the young ones or the eggs so it's recommended that they are on a pole that is baffled and away from trees or fences or where they can climb up and jump across to the bird house

Notice in that photo that the Nuthatch is hanging upside down. As is common to many birds, the Nuthatch hangs on the trucks of limbs searching for bugs or seeds that are caught in the cracks & crevices in the tree bark, however, unlike other birds, the Nuthatch starts up high in the tree and moves headfirst downward, which affords them a much better view into the crevices.

Since I retired in June I have taken up nature photography as a hobby. I have a feeder hung on a low limb of a Maple tree about 50 feet from the house. I then sit my Pentax *ist DL on a tripod with a 300mm manual focus lens zeroed in on the feeder. I then attach a 4ft shutter release cord to the camera. I can then turn on my MP3 player and sit motionless with the shutter release concealed in my coat pocket while i watch the activity at the feeder.

I am attaching a couple shots of the Nutchatch's at my feeder.

I love watching them move down the tree trunk....I have just seen them on the feeders for the first time this year.

We are retired too and really enjoy our birds!
