Yes that is a European starling, take it from me who posted a photo of one of these and told everyone on the forum it was a juvenile northern flicker!! So embarrassing but I was new at this and everyone was so nice about it. I sure recognize one now when I see it! :)

The starlings are (if you haven't found out yet) real nuisance birds. Up in my area (north of Boston in Massachusetts) there have been flocks of hundreds at least
flying all over. I would discourage them from feeders.

Luckily this is the only time I've seen them, so they aren't regulars in my area. There were several more up in the tops of the trees, but they stayed up there.

We had snow yesterday, and it was like I hit the bird bonanza....everyone came to visit my feeders and scrounge around on the ground beneath the feeders. This bird caught my attention because it was a "new to me" bird.

If they do come back, what should I do to discourage them?

I guess I wouldn't worry about it if he's the only one you've seen. Up here it was (and I guess maybe still is) a real problem only in certain areas.

I think people advise not to put out cracked corn etc. on the ground if they are around.
