Lack of Birds

As an avid birdwatcher, I have 2 well-stocked feeders and a couple of suet feeders in my back yard. Last winter we had plenty of birds in the yard all year and into 2010, up until about July. After that point, I stopped seeing doves and cardinals. In October, I pruned the main two trees back (apple) in order to keep them from getting out of hand. And I also switched brands of seed (same mix, cheaper brand.)

I have almost ZERO birds in the yard, even now when it's snowy and cold and i was expecting them to increase when winter weather came.

Is there any explanation? Those are the only two factors that have changed... I'm dumbfounded, would a severe pruning cause this?
