Feeding system for high winds

..a stable bird feeding system that will hold up to high winds? I've tried every sort of shepherd's hook available...to know avail...high winds have their way with them this time of year when I've got a few (relatively heavy) feeders hanging on them, or in the summer when I've got relatively heavy hummer feeders hanging on them.

I finally thought I had come up with a stout system. I took 3/4 inch electrical conduit, and drove it down so far I was getting phone calls from aggravated Chinese. Took what made a dang good hanger - an inverted stand from an artificial X-mas tree - and placed it atop the pole. This did fine for a couple of months until we had another round of high winds a couple of weeks ago. Came home from work to find both feeders hanging from it actually sitting on the ground, the pole had bent that much.

Any suggestions?

We have our garden fenced in. We also get some really strong winds here, some of our trees have a very strong lean to them despite the fact that we braced them! We use the fence posts around our garden to tie the bird feeders to or mount them on top of the posts. We have had good luck doing that. DH couldn't wait for the suet feeder to be ready so he just went out and put a dollop of peanut butter on a fence post. The chickadees loved it.

This suet feeder is actually wired to a corner post.

The other feeders are just fasten to the top of the posts.

it's rare we get really high winds but when we do i have all my feeders hanging with bungee cords and i can take them down in no time at all and put them on the back porch till later. Before i did that i had a whirlwind throw a couple of feeders across the yard and break them.

You had better check the setting of the throttle control cable and handle on the dash-board. It might have gotten disconnected, at the carburetor. and the throttle handle moves, but doesn't change the position of the cable. Or the throttle control on the carburetor. Sound like you need professional help. It is far cheaper than an engine that goes:"BANG"! At that point, your main revving problem will be solved. Also solved will be the fact that you needed professional help, but didn't want to pay the price!

Matt, you've had two very good ideas to implement. One, to plant those perennials that bear stout stems and when cut back in fall still retain sufficient stiffness of stems to act as erosion fighter and when snow flies, it holds layers that wont blow away. The second is to plant as many and as much wind deflectors that your yard can bear. Low hedges, low shrubbery and especially browdleafed evergreens that retain their leaves through winter. Taller evergreens may be considered if they do not detract from your overall landscaping scheme.

Jay, What new planting mix are you using? I want to hear about it! This year I'll be planting deep too since my soil moisture levels down deep are good, but soil moisture levels higher up are not good. I'll have to water deeply to make it work and with clay that's not always easy. That's terrible news about the fire near Santanta, KS. I hope everyone evacuates safely and that the firefighters can do their job in a safe and effective manner. With the winds today, I've felt like it was a matter of time before someone had a big fire somewhere. The sky here looks disgusting. For a while, it was a sort of a red dusty look like you get with dust storms blowing in from west Texas. Then, a couple of hours ago it started looking more like grayish-white fog or smoke from somewhere. Now it is yellow and a heavy layer of pollen is settling on the vehicles. We're going to have a whole rainbow of colors in the sky tonight and tomorrow. At least most of us here on this forum will not be endangered by the severe weather expected tonight and tomorrow. Dr. Forbes on The Weather Channel seems deeply concerned about the potential for very severe weather from all this mess, but it should start north and east of most of us. This morning, they interviewed a Storm Chaser guy in Sherman, TX, and asked where he and his bunch were headed today and he said Coffeyville, KS. He said once they got there, they'd check the latest weather data and head for wherever they thought the action would be. Around here, when we have the potential for severe weather that includes tornadoes, I just watch for the storm chaser vehicles. When those vehicles are driving up my road, that's when I head for the fraidy hole. Last year, Chris was out storm spotting with other firefighters and law enforcement officers and they ran into some storm chasers about a quarter-mile to a half-mile from our house. I heard them mention that on the radio and I headed for the cellar. About fifteen minutes later, the tornado touched down at the Red River near us and hop-scotched its way across the county, but didn't do any real damage. I don't really have to watch the local weather radar---I just watch for the storm chasers and that's all the warning I need. Dawn

I have a 48" built in and paneled JA. All the "works" compressor, control board, condenser are at the top of the fridge. There is a removable panel near the very top of the fridge, and it has a chain so you don't hafta hold onto the thing. You just "lift up" on that top panel and let it hang. I do like the "works" on top, as it would make the fridge easy to service should it ever need any, plus we have 3 cats, and the condenser on the JA, does not get full of "Cat fur", like our Elux wine fridge does, (Its works are on the bottom), apparently like your JA? I would get a can of the duster stuff I mentioned and spray the condenser then recheck the temps. Also check that all the door seals appear to be in their proper place. I suspects your JA is also a single Variable Speed Compressor as mine is. To better diagnose the problem, it would be helpful to know the freezer temp too. The way these VSC (variable speed compressor),work is that a sensor in the freezer compartment senses the temp there, and if the freezer is above set temp, then it speeds up the compressor. On the other hand, if sensors in the fridge section detect that the temp is above the fridge set temp. then it increases the circulation between the freezer and the fridge, by increasing the speed of the circulating fan or opening up a flap lever between the 2 compartments, or both, So to know whether the problem is compressor/condenser related, or a problem with circulation between freezer and fridge, we need to know the freezer temp. I have a suet log that looks very similar to Marric's. I drilled a hole about 3 inches straight up the bottom of the log, and slide it onto a pole. It is a heavy metal pole embedded in a block of concrete that was left behind by the previous owner, so I have no idea where she got it. But it reminds me of the kind of poles that were used for clothes lines. I've used 1" electrical conduit to mount a nest box, and this pole is much stronger, thicker metal. I don't have to dig to China to install it, either, only bury the concrete just under the soil surface.

It's quite sturdy, I don't think a hurricane could blow it over. The feeder, baffle, or other accessories might be a different story!

We just had really high winds this past week in eastern Massachusetts (wires down, power out at an office where I was on Tuesday). I wondered whether our feeders might have come crashing down. As it turns out they were okay.

We have two "bird feeding system" poles (kits about ($20-$30 each)screwed into the outside of our deck railing, with two screws holding each in place. The screws are placed so as to keep the poles very strongly attached to the deck wood.

I'm wondering whether you could put in a landscape timber (4 x 4 x 10?) like you did the conduit, and attach one of these feeder pole systems at the height you want. The digging is a lot of work (!) but if you plant the timber deeply enough and fill in with the right materials around the base of the timber it should hold through about any winds. Then you just need to be sure your poles are anchored well on the timber, and your feeders are on securely.

Good luck with this - sometimes it takes time to figure out what will work, and everyone's situation is different.
