I accidentally left Nov. 9 birding photos out of my "November sightings" post

We went up on Poppy mountain early and found the brush swarming with birds. I was able to get a few photos

Thanks for sharing your great pictures with us. As one who still uses a dial-up connection to the web, I appreciate smaller postings (like this posting). For some reason, my browser seems to 'time out' when I try to download your large postings.

Sorry..I'll try to get organized and post in smaller increments.

My live journal link, http://www.livejournal.com/, has most of the photos I post here, or you can go to my Picasa Web Album by left clicking on any of the photos. Then click on "My Photos" link at the top of photo to get to page showing all the albums. To enter any of the albums, click on the first photo.

Then you can click on "slideshow" and click on your F 11 key for full screen. I don't know how well that would work with dial-up, though

Outsmarting the tree rats (squirrels) around my house is a full time job. This past spring I hit on a new idea. When I plant a container I invert an empty wire hanging basket over the container and the plant gets sun and can be watered but the squirrels can't dig in it. Another idea: I bring in a lot of plants to "over winter" under lights in my garage. I have so many that it is hard to reach my hand under the lights (4 shop lights) to the middle for watering. So I bought a pump sprayer with a long wand and it works great! In late winter I add a little liquid Dawn detergent, few drops, to each gallon of water and not only does the soil get wet easier but the worms that are waiting to hatch into distructive pets just don't hatch. Don't know what it costs me to run those four shop lights all winter but I don't care. It is a small price to pay to be able to "garden" every weekend in the garage. Many people have mentioned that they mark their outdoor plants with a "permanent Sharpie". In my experience there isn't a "permanent Sharpie", they all fade and quickly too. A grease pencil/china marker or expensive "no fade" garden center marker are the only markers I have found that won't disappoint you by fading. Eight years ago I decided to learn about gardening so I tapped into my local library. I checked out nearly every book they had on gardening and learned so much. The Gardenweb forums are also a wealth of information and entertainment. There is always something new to learn and I appreciate all of you who take the time to write in your ideas. One last idea from me...I keep a small notebook on my computer table and jot down any idea I find that's new and I will want to try. Little pieces of paper get lost but I always know where my notebook is and also use it when I order "on line" so I will remember the name of the company and the order date. Tina or Trowelgal

Thank you! I suppose one is a photographer if one takes photos, but I've not bought any professional cameras or sold anything. Since DuBois bought me Canon Powershot S2 IS 12 X zoom and Olympus SP-550 18 X zoom point-and-shoot cameras I've taken photos but was disappointed in the picture quality, so Gail suggested I buy a DSLR. DuBois' mom sent Christmas money in 2007, so I did research and bought a Canon EOS 40-D camera and Canon EF 400mm f/5.6 L lens in Jan. 2008. It's taken a long time to get the hang of it, and even now, most of the photos have to be deleted-I'll typically take 300 photos and keep 13. At first I used tripods, but now just handhold or brace my arm against my knee. I still have to get VERY close for the photos to look like anything, so it's mostly about knowing the bird calls, habitat, habits, and trying to gain an advantage with height, lighting, etc I try to get close enough to use the auto-focus, but it only works well in strong light, with no surrounding branches. To compensate for my eyesight, I usually twist the manual focus back and forth as I shoot rapidly, in hopes that something will be in focus

Thanks! The Hooded Warbler male pulling on the cocoon happened just as I was getting up to shut down my camera and try somewhere else after an hour of waiting..typical! Two days ago when there was a break in the storms we drove up on Poppy Mnt at sunset and got a few pics from the car as we drove around 6-9-09, Poppy Mnt barn, adult male Barn Swallow, 6:15 p.m. Time for a stretch.. From 6-5-09, birds Then to the right.. From 6-5-09, birds ..flex those shoulders.. From 6-5-09, birds Much better! From 6-5-09, birds We drove to an access rd that overlooked a steep gully and saw several Yellow-billed Cuckoos flying around but they didn't come close enough for good photos. Thank you for your kind comments! We visited the fish hatchery last weekend but didn't see one migrant. Yesterday morning we hit the bird lottery, though. A rare migrant and two lifers, as well as a warbler. I took so many photos (over 1700) that my computer has been barely functional, so have had trouble working on the photos. Time to install a second hard drive, just for photos (sigh)

Thanks for your consideration, Rachel. A note on visiting your Picasa site: As visitors, we don't see a button titled "My Photos". We must click on the button called "Photos by Rachel" to go the page showing all of your albums. Your camera has been busy!!

Unfortunately, the slide show feature doesn't work very well with a dial-up connection.

You HAVE so stop posting these amazingly wonderful photos!!!!! They make me want to go buy a new camera, quit my job, move to a different area and spend all my time watching for birds and trying to achieve the gorgeous kinds of photos you show us!!!!

LOL! You sound like me..every time I see photos better that what my camera can take I want to buy that camera and move to where I can see more exotic birds and warblers.

Right now my sights are set on the new Canon EOS 7D-many times better picture, focus, etc- since my little Canon 40D is now obsolete. It was cutting edge, $1400 Feb. of 2008, you can now buy it new for $400.

The Canon 7D was released at $1700, but you can already buy it online for $829, free shipping. If I hadn't just paid to get my car fixed, I could have bought it. But I supposed if I wait a little longer the price will keep dropping.

I have a lot of time to go birding because the online classes I teach haven't started yet. I also substitute teach in the local schools and help DB compose e letters in his sales business, but more work would mean more money!

We do plan to move to Albuquerque to see more exotic birds as soon as DB completes one of the large sales he's been working on, but they've been dragging on and on up until now because of the depressed economy.
