Robins devouring winterberries! Now?!!

I had a large flock of robins today descending on my winterberry bushes and devouring all berries.
I have never seen this before - usually, berries stay on the bushes all winter long till spring when
migrating birds partially eat them. But never in fall.
Aren't winterberries supposed to be inedible until they go through multiple freeze-thaw cycles
during the winter?
My winterberry bushes are completely bare now - every single berry is gone!
I guess, no winter festive display this year.
