Please help me indentify this insect

I will try to post the picture not sure if it will work.

I have to say that I am a little, ok alot distrubed by them. I saw one at first and being a nature lover I was curious to see what they were. When I turned around I noticed them EVERYWHERE in my garage. On all my daughters toys on the floor on the wall EVERYWHERE!! They look like a cocoon but at the top there is a black worm pushing its body with the cocoon forward. They also hang on a thread a silk but the black worm is always out of the cocoon like body. The cocoon is made of straw and grass I think. I dont know why they are only around my garage and how to get rid of them. HELP!!!

Possibly bagworms, a type of moth. How many are there?

There is much info about bagworms on the Web.

Thank you that is what it is. I looked at a picture of bagworms and thats them. We have ALOT of them they seem to like our garage. We have 40 arborvitae (newly bought) and we found a couple on them too. I hope we don't lose any trees to them. We are going to try to control with insecticides. As much as I hate using chemicals. Those trees weren't cheap. Let me know if you have any ideas on controling them. The are about 1/2in long.

Hi Drew. The first set of palms are Pygmy Date Palms (phoenix roebelenii) They're not fan palms they are pinnate or feather palms. The second set of palms look to be Mediterranean Fan Palms (Chamaerops humilis). They are fan palms also known as palmate palms. They all look very healthy. Jay

CeresMer, I hear you. This year is somehow particularly bad. I even started to spray insecticide which I never did before, and still they find ways to do some damage (but the spray did help to some extent). The thing is, I was never able to actually see them!! I see some aphids, yes, but never any other insects (apart from bees and ladybugs of course) on my roses. So when I saw this poor guy, I instinctively thought he was the culprit! Lol.

Sounds like there are enough of them to justify using insecticides, although this is apparently harder to do once the worms are large enough to form large bags.
