Funny dark gray, skittering birds

I just had 3 pretty funny birds in my yard that I've never seen before and can't for the life of me identify them. I'm assuming they're migrating but that's just an assumption.

They were very dark gray, almost a blue gray. The males and females (I'm assuming) are very similar in appearance however one of them is about 4 shades darker than the other. They are perching birds, both had yellow beaks and they move very quick on their feet. They skitter about almost like mice, no slow hopping like a Robin. They had a black eye ring. I think their yellow bills were the only color on them. Their necks and backs were solid, it was a pretty sleek looking bird (like a Cedar Waxwing) but their wings did have some slight pattern though a lighter version of the rest of their body. Don't recall much about their tails so nothing about that particularly stood out to me.

One of them was eating a dead tree leaf which I thought was weird.

There is a slight chance that they have a crest or one gender has a crest - I couldn't tell because it's really windy today and they pretty quick too.

I'm in Northern Illinois.
