There are many "old friends" on this forum, from when Joe, Feather and I were active here 10 years ago.

I agree - food is the way to go with a 20 something guy. We are big on barbeque. Chili is good too if he likes the hot stuff. I don't know who you can order from in Dallas but The County Line in Austin has great BBQ and I know they ship out. I know when I moved to San Diego California and went to any so called "Mexican" restaurant and tried to order chips and queso they didn't have a clue what queso was. Send him a can of Rotel Tomatoes and Green Chilies, velveeta cheese, and tortilla chips and he can make it himself! Mmmm...I'm getting hungry.

First one is an aerial view, the only place there should be water is to the left by the boats. Notice no docks are visible. Before the river crested, we were 28 inches above normal. Next picture is a few boaters walking back from their boat, they came to tell us it was waist high further down this road. Next picture is a few boaters standing by our boat after the water had receded about a foot and a half, our docks still underwater. Next picture is the road leading into our marina, friends were able to launch a wave runner on the road & drive it to the river, that is how flooded the road was! Hubby & grandson wading out to help launch friends waver runner.

First of all, don't give up on the therapy--this is what many would consider an emergency, so DO NOT let the therapists put you off. Call your local children's hospital for a referral or, if need be, call the suicide hotline for advice. Yes, the threat is vague, but you're absolutely right that it needs to be addressed, sooner rather than later. Beyond that, try to get your son interested in doing something to make a difference. Maybe he could initiate gun safety talks for younger children, or perhaps there's some way he could volunteer with the police. Brainstorm with him to try to find something he (and perhaps the other 2 children involved) could do to make the world a better place now. Even if it's just getting a playground or Angel Garden installed in the local playground in memory of their friend. The more you can get him involved in making a difference, the more worthwhile life will seem to him. My nephew was similarly depressed when, in high school, he saw his best friend fall through the ice and die. There was a bridge keeper right above where the accident happened, but he had no emergency equipment available (it would have made a difference). I suggested to my Dsis that nephew see if he could raise money to get the equipment so nothing like this ever happened again. They went to the mayor/counsel, and THEY agreed that it was necessary and provided the emergency things for the bridge. My nephew was the catalyst and was able to feel that at least he helped stop this from happening again, hopefully. I reallly think, getting your son involved in something that makes a difference is the way to go here. Might take a little encouraging, maybe even a little subterfuge (you might present it that YOU want to start some sort of memorial effort, and see if it doesn't encourage him to get involved, rather than pushing the idea at him when he may not be quite ready for it yet). Very sad story--my condolences to all who have been affected.

Oh, Rachel, I'm so sorry. It sounds like things are going from bad to worse for kittygirl. The only other thing I can think to recommend is to get her to a university vet school clinic, if possible. That's where you'll find a lot of veterinary specialists and specialized diagnostic equipment under one roof. If a definitive diagnosis and effective treatment plan can be established, that's where it's most likely to happen. Please keep us updated. I wish you and kittygirl the best possible outcome. Laurie

Hi Elly, I've just looked at a picture of Joe, when he visited Feather in November 2000.I'm so sorry to hear the shocking news.

I didn't want to put this online before other friends contacted me, but hardly anyone has gotten back:

Joe died of a massive heart attack last Monday. I cannot get access to the obit, because you have to be a paid subscriber to the Sentinal of Keene.

This was a big, unexpected shock.

anne just sent me a note to tell me about joe's untimely death--thank you for posting it elly.

not too long after i initially posted here about a decade ago, i decided i wanted to meet some of the folks i'd been chatting with and we invited them for a cookout. joe and deb joined us, as did a couple from rhode island and 3 other folks from here in NH. just a nice, nice bunch and i remain in touch with some of them still. as i just said to a couple of them, joe was a very gentle soul who was quite good with a camera. i remember one pic in particular, of a hummingbird on an evergreen branch. it was a beauty and was going to be used as a cover shot for a local college. he was just way too young for this and i'm really sorry to hear the news!

Anyone know anything about TheJollySwagman? I haven't seen him on this forum for quite a while. I enjoyed (and collected) his stories, such as -

Hi, to all the Old Friends, and thank you so much for posting this, Elly. I'm extremely saddened to hear this news, and his obit confirmed the man who posted here so regularly. He was the first to always warmly welcome everyone, always helped, and captured/shared so many beautiful pictures. Some of them were hilarious!

I will be keeping his family in my prayers. How appropriate that memorial contributions can be made to the Humane Society.

Sorry to hear about Keith, but thanks, Elly, for letting me know. I probably missed the news because I am sometimes off this forum for periods of time. I'm glad I saved copies of some of his stories. I feel that they ought to be published, but of course I don't have the right to do that. But if any one has contact with any of his family, and if they are interested in obtaining a copy of some of his stories (if they don't have a copy), I'd be glad to email a copy to them.

Elly, thanks for posting the sad information. Too many gone, too soon it seems, including your wonderful mom. Fun to think back to the 90's when we got this site started with Spike in charge... so much fun to find others who were as "crazy" as us about the feathered world. Hope all is well with you.
