Late Season Tomatoes - Lighting for Early Start

I really want to try some late season tomatoes next year even though I live in a short season zone. All my life (50+ yrs) my only success has been with the early 50-65 day varieties. But when the ground here doesn't really warm up until about June 7 and the first frost can be here during the last week of August or first week of September it's not easy. Early September frost doesn't leave much production time on a tomato that starts ripening in late August.

What's my best solution, short of a greenhouse? I usually start my tomatoes in early April and set them out about June 5. I start them under a dual 40-watt regular flourescent lighting fixture. Along with some air circulation from an oscillating fan this seems to produce fairly strong plants.

Would I do OK to start the late season varieties in early March under dual-lamp 40 watt flourescents?

Would three months under a 40-watt dual lamp flourescent fixture be too long? would I need mutliple flourescents for metal-halide?

Any suggestions appreciated, especially non-expensive ones.
