Where does one buy white millet?

Hi,

I am looking for seeds to feed ground feeding birds like Juncos. Currently, I have been feeding them thistle seeds because squirrels don't eat them. If I use sunflower seeds, squirrels consume them in 5 min.

Someone told me that squirrels don't like white millet. However, I am having difficulty finding white millets. Where does one buy the stuff?

Or is it just more economical to buy a mix of millet, corn and other stuff. If the squirrel comes and eat it, that's fine as long as they leave some for the birds.

Hmm... I saw that link. Weith $10 shipping, it's not too bad (the other ones had like $20-30 shipping). Several of the comments indicated that the vendor shipped them yellow millet instead of white millet. I have never heard of yellow millet? I think it was either white or red. In any way, I was wondering if you folks have ahd any experience with this vendor.

Terra, If you had only loosened the roots and not actually dug them up/turned them over, there's a good chance your cover crop would have resprouted. Since you went back and turned over the bed with a shovel, the cover crops should decompose over the next few weeks. Just watch carefully for resprouting the next couple of weeks. Usually, just disking under the cover crop (with a tractor if you're a farmer and with a rototiller or shovel if you're a gardener) will be enough to halt all growth and start the decomposition process, but there's no guarantee. Sometimes you have to turn over the soil a couple more times to ensure the plants don't resprout and to make sure they are decomposing. I can't help with the availability of Purple Millet seed in Tulsa, but I don't remember seeing it on seed racks anywhere here in southern OK or northcentral Texas. If you grew puple millet last year and let it go to seed, you may get volunteers in that part of your landscape this year. It reseeds in my garden every now and then. I haven't grown any the last few years though. The volunteers aren't quite as purple as the original plant was though. Gardenweb is putting the ads into our posts using the Vibrant ad system. Sometimes your reputable/fairly local HVAC/Electrical/Plumbing type stores that cater to the trade will have a separate fixture gallery to display their pretties like showers, toilets, shower doors, lighting etc. Their "main" store may be more warehouse type that has all the ugly plumbing, electrical, HVAC type stuff. There is a Kentucky based company like this that is my go-to place. They have a gorgeous fixture showroom. I agree - cabinet dealers are a good source for vanities.

Bradford white insists on professional installation of their products therefore they limit sales to wholesale only to the plumbing trade. They do not market to retail stores. When discussing electric water heaters the truth of the matter is that their is precious little difference in any of them. Consider the facts: When building electric water heaters in most instances the water heater manufacturer assembles the steel pressure vessel, the insulation blanket and the external sheet metal housing. Once the tank is assembled it is then fitted with controls and heating elements made by a third party manufacturer. Although you may find an exception that proves the rule for the most part the upper and lower thermostats are all produced by "Thermodisc", "Robert-Shaw' or "GE" and the heating elements are generally made by "Chromalox" As a rule nearly all water heaters, both gas and electric, are then fitted with temperature & pressure relief valves made by "Watts mfg".

i was lucky enough to find a lumber mill two hours away from us that actually had hard-to-find styles in stock, so there was no waiting and not a lot of extra expense when we ran out of our recycled paneling during our reno. just in case you might be nearby, here's the link. we found them by checking with a local mill (who would have been happy to do it, $$ and 3-4 weeks) but they were very helpful finding someone who had it in stock. Millet is usually one of the easier seeds to find in bulk. You didn't mention where you've looked in your area but feed stores and specialty outdoor bird feeding shops definitely should have it. Many big box pet stores have a "wild/outdoor bird" food aisle or section. I know both our Petsmart and Petco's do. You can even find it grocery stores, usually near the pet food. I'd would be very surprised if you'd have to order it.
In my experience, junco's will chow down on any type of millet and the squirrels get frustrated because the seeds are so small. They will eat it but prefer larger fare. Have you tried throwing some peanuts in the shell out for them? The squirrels I mean. I prefer to use roasted peanuts myself.

You're wrong - I've been looking for millet that's not mixed with other seeds everywhere. Amazon is the only place that carries it.
Paulsiu - I haven't ordered it yet, so I can't say.

ranchway feeds makes a little wings rocky mountain blend
that is mostly millet with some cracked corn and black sunflowers, Around here the ranch and feed stores carry it
and the farm supply stores such a basin coop or cenex do too

I buy a 50 pound bag of white proso millet from my feed store and it is about $12.00 or so. It is just millet, nothing else added. I would call around to your outlying feed stores and see if they have it or could order it for you. I buy mine for my guineas. The juncos and a few other birds will clean up any leftovers, but there usually isn't much.

The shop where I work carries white millet in 20, 10 & 5 lb. bags.
Starlinka - you don't say where you live but I'm sure there's a source of millet somewhere near you.

I live in NC. We have Tractor Supply, Bartlett Milling Company, Lowes, a few pet shops. No one sells millet.

I live in Maryland, lots of stores here carry white millet --- Southern States, wildbird stores, hardware stores, pet stores and garden centers.

I went to google and looked up feed store and typed in my zip code, it return a page of stuff, many were combo feed store / garden center. I tend started calling up each of the by distance from my house. The first store was actually near where my wife works and cost $17 for 50 lbs and I can also purchase by the pound.

Where does one buy white millet?
