My first Junco this year

Location: suburb west of Chicago.

This morning, my wife commented at breakfast on a grayish bird with white belly. I looked out and notice a junco on the patio. It's bit early for them, but it's the first Junco this year.

What's that old phenology adage? When you see your first junco, it will snow within two weeks? Something like that. Saw our first this week as well.

I'm north of you. The Juncos returned here over a week ago.

The first has bloomed now, and I've posted pictures. I'm doing a time lapse video of these growing, so I think I have the light too far away to accommodate the cameras. They are under a 7" humidity dome, and the light is on top. If I didn't have to accommodate the cameras, I'd put the light about an inch or two away from the top of the plant.

It may grow past the damage. Or it may not. I personally would eat the fruit they produce--others may have a different opinion--but the badly damaged ones may not produce fruit or only produce a small amount, and it may be stunted. The brown spot on the tomato in the first picture looks like damage from rubbing against the cage. Such damage is no big deal unless a mold or something takes the opportunity to start rotting the fruit or it attracts the attention of a pest. EDIT: For future, maybe you can put your plants somewhere else on your property. If not, maybe you can talk to your neighbor and come to some kind of agreement or you can offer to pull his weeds by hand/hire a neighborhood kid to pull his weeds by hand or something, depending on what problem he's trying to solve.

Threeboxerlover, I am new here too and have also learned so much! Especially about picking rose varieties that will do well in my climate and not being afraid to try something and shovel prune if it’s not right. I haven’t shovel pruned anything yet, since I also learned that roses need at least three years to show you what they are going to do. I too lost a couple early on before I knew what I was doing. I love the warm colored roses you chose, beautiful!

i live in the foothills of the west slope of the Rockies near Durango Colorado. this afternoon i saw my first one of the season. I was a slate colored with a rusty sploch on its back. it spent about 1/2 hour checking out the feeders and the ground and the trees around. left out and hoping it will be back soon

YUP it's always OH NO Junco! My first one showed up Thursday ( West Michigan). Happy to welcome them back but sadly it means a long winter. I think they remind some of my later migraters to pack up and get out while they can!

I noticed ours came back yesterday in northwest NJ...and we're expecting 6" of SNOW Saturday!

First Junco today in central Connecticut with a 1" accumulation last night. 3"-5" expected tomorrow and Juncos are at the feeder now. Old adage still correct.

First junco today in southeastern MA on the coast. There was some snow and icing inland last night, but none here in my little microclimate.

The forecast calls for rain tomorrow night changing to snow Sunday morning. The major problem here on the coast will be strong winds (High Wind Watch) with tree damage and power outages.

In past years I didn't see juncos often, but since I've been sprinkling nyjer seed on the ground for small birds (and turkeys), the juncos have multiplied.

I love these birds. Most of the time when you can't see them, you can certainly hear them. Refreshing sounds in the dead of winter!

The juncos have yet to show up in my yard, here in Maryland. They usually show up around October 1. Maybe someone in the neighborhood is feeding them something they like better.
