Earlier this year (in June) I made two nestboxes, with one-inch openings (for wrens). I put one behind a lattice that is behind our herb garden:
From
Wren NestboxesI covered the other one with twigs for a 'log-cabin' or natural look, which I put in a Rose-of-Sharon tree:
From
Wren NestboxesSince then, some of the sticks have fallen off because the bark was loose. I picked up the sticks and was planning to put them back on, and the next day this downy woodpecker showed up:
From
Wren NestboxesThe downy woodpecker was pecking at the entrance hole to enlarge it so that he can use the nestbox. With a one-inch opening, it would be usable only by a wren, but I don't mind if the downy uses it. First come, first served!
From
Wren NestboxesWould the downy be thinking of raising a family at this time of year? Planning for a winter shelter seems more likely to me, although the weather is still fairly mild here in NJ.
