Common Grackles

Today I noticed a few Common Grackles visiting the feeders. I'm in southeast MA on the coast. This is an unusual time for them - they usually leave in mid-summer and don't come back until next spring. Occasionally one will stay for the winter, but that's rare. Maybe they're migrating through and just stopped because they know the area and my feeders.

To me the grackle is a beautiful bird, as well as being a voracious caterpillar eater, so they're welcome. Looks good with the ornamental grasses.

This may be a juvenile (lighter color) and an adult (giving me the suspicious eye).

Thanks for sharing Claire. Especially when glinting in the sun these birds can be very pretty.

Thanks deanie1. In late winter/early spring the grackles in the sun can be one of the brightest things in the drab garden.

Oh Please! Don't throw yourself under a bus, Sarah! When I get cold and clinical I'll be cold and stiff. :-) Maybe some rehabbers can get that way (or need to) because they see hundreds of creatures and they need to cull out those who will take up their time and space in the facility? Poor Mr. Cardinal. Poor Barry! They might not be around if that would be the case!!! This is not a clinical setting here. This is our home. Whoever comes here for aid gets all we can offer to the best of our ability. Emotionally it probably isn't the best because we quickly fall in love with the latest addition and are heartbroken if things turn out less than the best. Always a big supply of tissues here. When I say I have bloodshot eyes ... I *really* do. But the joy that comes from helping someone far outweighs the sad times! Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal showed off their 4 fledglings last Sunday. We are 113% sure it is OUR Mr. C.! OMG! We have grand-chicks. :-) How can I care if I don't care? You wouldn't be able to care for animals either, Sarah, if you didn't care. That's all we can do is to try some days, isn't it? The rest is out of our hands. Thanks, S. Until the next guest ... C3D (Gotta have at least ONE happy ending this year! We'll work on it!!!)

Thanks Jim.....since it was so darned cold and we had no specific plans except to entertain the grandkids it was a perfect opportunity to sit on my keester and look at the birds. We do get a pretty good mix of backyard birds...and this was really quite fun. I had never taken an entire day to record all the different backyard birds and I was really impressed with the variety...some times the very things we see each day are not noticed because of the familiarity...but, I did enjoy this and plan to do it again. Its nice when my husband and I can get some time off work and travel to Audubon Park, or the wildlife refuge to take a look at the birds...but, sometimes its amazing what you can see in your own backyard....thanks again Jim... ~Kathy~

I love your birding equipment reviews! I also saw the spotting scope/cameras advertised in Wildird, but I've not yet taken the time to "scope out the scopes" to compare their photo quality with regular DSLRs. As expensive as lenses are, the scope/camera combo should save photographers thousands of dollars, if the quality is comparable.

Thanks! The Hooded Warbler male pulling on the cocoon happened just as I was getting up to shut down my camera and try somewhere else after an hour of waiting..typical! Two days ago when there was a break in the storms we drove up on Poppy Mnt at sunset and got a few pics from the car as we drove around 6-9-09, Poppy Mnt barn, adult male Barn Swallow, 6:15 p.m. Time for a stretch.. From 6-5-09, birds Then to the right.. From 6-5-09, birds ..flex those shoulders.. From 6-5-09, birds Much better! Great pictures, at certain times of the year, Grackle shows up in large numbers around my feeder. They dominate the feeder except for the red belly woodpecker. Fortunately, they don't stick around forever, so I don't get just grackles.

Sometimes they show up in groups and they all look up in the sky at the same time (like your last picture), which I thought was weird, but it turns out that is a dominating gesture. Basically, they're all thumping their chest at each other. They all have very beautiful sheen feathers ranging from shiny black to a greenish color.

When I visited my sister in California, I notice they have what looks like a smaller version of the Grackle (I think they are Brewer's black bird). But she also gets Ravens, which I have seen only once in my area (probably passing through). I was shocked to see a crow like bird size of a duck.

I've never seen a raven, Paul, but I'd love to. I've read that they are very playful and that one was seen flying upside down for about a kilometer.

I've also noticed that the red-bellies will stand up to the grackles. A few years ago I saw a grackle and a red-belly together on a suet/orange feeder.

The grackle tried to scare the woodpecker away, using some sort of threatening sounds,

but the woodpecker just returned the threat:

They both stayed on the feeder. A lot of bluster goes on in the bird world.

Yesterday I was searching through some photo files looking for something else and I ran across an encounter between a Northern Flicker and a grackle.

The flicker was apparently calmly eating suet

when a grackle appeared and tried to chase the flicker away.

The flicker was not impressed and the grackle decided to share.

I'm getting more and more respect for woodpeckers (flickers included). You never hear of them being aggressive, but they really stand their ground.
