Nuthatches

Have been seeing a few nuthatches at my feeder this year. They are so pretty!! This morning I saw one at trees pecking. Have also noticed that they can stand upside down (best way I can put it LOL). Are they related to woodpeckers?

Nuthatches are in the Sitta genus and are not very closely related to woodpeckers. The superfamily they have been assigned to (based on DNA sequencing) includes creepers, wrens, and gnatcatchers. Funnily enough, woodpeckers and nuthatches aren't even classified in the same order (Piciformes and Passeriformes, respectively). But they are all birds; they have that in common. :-)

With the cold season around the corner, keep an eye out for the Red-breasted Nuthatches in addition to your year-round White-breasted.

Karen Its takes some time and then location could play a part.. But increasing your hummer habitat should help ,, more feeders possibly spaced on opposite sides of the house where there might be less fighting. Then of course some good hummer plants will attract a bigger crowd too. As for the type of plants that work best for hummers is up for debate and that is best left for another thread.

Red - breasted Nuthatch ..breeding?

Had them nesting and successfully raised a batch at least a month ago,...seems male is every day at the nesting box shouting to attract a mate,...doesn't he knows breeding is over! I don't really get what's going on. Have them for years but never seen them have two broods.
