Red Crossbill

Today I was out helping a graduate student capture woodpeckers for her doctoral work. We were trapping at a water feature and we caught a flock of Red Crossbills in our mist nets. I forgot my camera today but then remembered I have a camera on my phone. So, I snapped a pic of the last crossbill we removed from the net. I managed to get a side profile so you can see the crossed bill. It was really cool to handle these birds and see their unique bill structure up close.

i was lucky last winter to have a flock of about a dozen red crosbills come to my feeders for a few weeks they usually look for pine or pinyon nuts but feasted daily on black oil sunflower seeds daily till they moved on.

Thanks for posting that picture. I've never seen a crossbill. It does sound really, really cool.

I am enjoying your photos. I do wish warmer weather would come your way. I honestly don't know how those of you who live in frigid cold can bear it. It is 18 degrees here and I am frozen through, despite having the thermostat at 71. Brrr. It's snowing, too.

Wonderful, Konrad! Did you deliberately pile the cones there or just find them? The crossed bills really work to pull out the seeds, as designed. I've only see a White-winged Crossbill once and it was just perched quietly, not racing around feeding. You get all the great birds up there! Claire

We get them here in south central Illinois. We had one a couple years ago that stayed around about a year and a half then disappeared. We've had another one now for about 9 months. The odd thing is we only ever see just one, never a pair. They are busy little guys and hide a tremendous amount of seed.

What a cool bird. Wonder why they call it "red" crossbill -- didn't see any red on it.

looks like a female red crossbill to me. the males are have lots of red on them
