Sherry, my parents have raspberries growing along their tree line (Wood at the back of their lot, mostly Oak trees) and they do just fine. In fact, they do better then fine because they get more berries then they can handle. LOL... I hate going over there when the berries are in because it's raspberries on everything they offer me to eat... They even make me go pick them. BTW, sorry to hear of Tornadoes; hopefully everyone made it ok. I worked Hurricane Andrew with the Red Cross back in the early 90's and know 1st hand what tornadoes can do...

Florence, think about Renae. It is thornless (or supposed to be, mine actually has a few), has pretty pink blooms and is supposed to be very fragrant. It overwintered very well in my zone. I planted a band of it last summer (late summer, i think) and in that short time, it grow 10 feet up and almost over an arbor. It's quite vigorous. I can't tell you much about the blooms as this year should be its first blooms. I did see it at a public garden and it was really beautiful. Very cool! Do you know what variety they are or are they volunteers? Have you tasted them yet? I ate my first green machine melon yesterday, from seeds I got from Trudi. They are also small and green, so they sound kind of like yours. It was sweet and very, very good. So far, I only have one more of that variety on the vine still developing. However, I think I put too many melon plants in one big pot, so I'm guessing yield would have been better out in the garden. I had green machine in the same pot as golden sweet melons, so I'm guessing if I tried to collect seed, it would be some weird mix of the two.

No, I don't smoke. No one in the house does. I did decide to apply some fungicide and then I fertilized with Miracle Gro and liquid seaweed. So far the plants continue to put out new growth that doesn't appear to be affected, and they otherwise appear healthy. We've also had sun for the last week, thank goodness, and the soil is no longer sodden. Phew. Maybe whatever it is won't be a disaster after all. I appreciate the suggestions!
