Spider Identification, please.

Hi all, I've just found this little critter in my garage the other day. I think that it might be a fisher spider, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know what type of spider it is and if it is worrisome? I'd prefer not to kill it unless I have to, but I have a very small child at home, so I am trying to be careful.

Here are a few more (maybe relevant) facts:

1 - I live in the Raleigh, NC area.

2 - That photo was taken while the spider was on the ground.

3 - The photo was taken at night.

4 - The spider didn't pay me any attention, even though I passed within a foot or so of it a few times.

5 - I know I should have included a scale with it, but I'd estimate that the spider is about an inch and a quarter from the tip of the front leg to the tip of the back leg.

It looks like a wolf spider of some kind. One way to tell between wolf spiders and fishing spiders is to look at the positions of the eyes. To me, it does not look like a carolina wolf spider Hogna carolinensis, but maybe. You might try an ID request on bugguide.net. I don't think that you need to be worried about it. Just don't try to handle it.

Huntsman spiders have a hairy covering especially on the mandibles. I don't see any of it so this is Recluse. The Huntsman and Recluse are of similar size differing mainly in the presents or absence of "hair." Besides Huntsman are none aggressive. Also the fact the poster noted the aggressive behavior leads me to conclude it is a Recluse.

'Crab' spider can be a confusing common name. But, some crab spiders can be called orb weavers. Some orb weavers are called crab spiders. And then, there are crab spiders that don't make webs, but are active hunters. Do a google image search and you'll see what I mean! Sorry, hortster, that's the best I could do with that question.

What? I didn't know there was a false Widow spider. I would have killed it in an instant. We have the real thing here. Black widow spiders and juveniles. If you live in an area that has these spiders, you need to know what the juveniles look like. I have killed at least 60 of them. Thank God I never got bit by one. They love to be between my nursery pots.
