Found this one in the corner of my garage. Any ideas?

It's one of the orb weavers. Have you noticed any large spider webs around?

rhizo 1, I figure that you will know - what is the difference between an orb weaver such as the one pictured and a crab spider, or is a crab spider a type of orb weaver? TIA.

Huntsman spiders have a hairy covering especially on the mandibles. I don't see any of it so this is Recluse. The Huntsman and Recluse are of similar size differing mainly in the presents or absence of "hair." Besides Huntsman are none aggressive. Also the fact the poster noted the aggressive behavior leads me to conclude it is a Recluse.

What? I didn't know there was a false Widow spider. I would have killed it in an instant. We have the real thing here. Black widow spiders and juveniles. If you live in an area that has these spiders, you need to know what the juveniles look like. I have killed at least 60 of them. Thank God I never got bit by one. They love to be between my nursery pots.

Yes, it is a female BW spider. They are always round, black, and glossy. The distinctive red markings can be variable....sometimes red hourglass shaped spot on the underside of abdomen, sometimes not. Sometimes, they will have red spots on top. The shape and color, however, is always the same. Keep the area cleaned out routinely. I sprinkle horticultural grade diatomaceous earth liberally in nooks and crannies where these spiders frequent.

'Crab' spider can be a confusing common name. But, some crab spiders can be called orb weavers. Some orb weavers are called crab spiders. And then, there are crab spiders that don't make webs, but are active hunters. Do a google image search and you'll see what I mean!
