I was just noticing the other day they have completely cleaned off my Sparkleberry holly(hybrid between verticillata and serrata)while my Winter Red(only verticillata) is still loaded. I think Aronias are called Chokeberries because they aren't palatable, even to birds, unless there is absolutely nothing else!

they (myrica) are favored by cedar waxwings here. those same birds feed on the berries of junipers, too.

I was just visiting a friend and he had constructed a big tent of netting above his strawberries and blueberries. A cardinal had somehow gotten in and then could not get out. It was flying around and around, exhausting itself! We pulled up a corner and the bird was able to escape. Birds don't bother my blueberries. I actually planted them for the birds (but we eat some too) and the berries stay on the bush forever!

I'm growing multiple types of viburnums, but the V. trilobum bushes are the largest and oldest. Supposedly humans can eat them, prepared like cranberries. I guess it is just a disappointment when nothing seems to want to eat them "as advertised". I guess the one good thing is that they can be enjoyed as decoration for the entire time since the berries hang on until they fall off in spring. Flocks of robins came in early January, but did not return again in numbers to our area in PA, while they came back several times by the hundreds to our suburban lot in Maryland (on a hill). Why do I never see any cedar waxwings in N. Central MD? My inlaws said they had them in Alexandria, VA (at least once on their holly)
