How Patient are you with a Variety?

OK, 4 years now growing Neves Azorean Red. I LOVE this variety!

Year 1: 2005 One plant, never produced, only variety hit hard by disease. This was mostly a disease free year in my garden except for NAR.

Year 2 and 3: 2006, 2007 Two plants each of these years. All 4 plants were fantastic! Loved the taste and production. Huge bushy plants. 2 mostly disease free years in my garden.

Year 4: 2008 Two plants. One plant never produced. First plant in garden to get Early Blight. Second plant is trying to hang on but is finished now as well. I got maybe 5 eddible fruit from it. Bad disease year in my garden.

So, two out of 4 years great and the other two years the worst. 50/50 so far. If I didn't love the taste and size of NAR I'd drop it from my Must Grow list but I'm leaning towards growing it again next year but it will be on probation.

How long will you stick with a mediocre performer? How many chances will you give a variety? If you were me would you invite NAR back to next year's party?

50% good enough for growing a tom as good as NAR, Try one next year treating the soil witn corn meal WORKS FOR ME.

Bigdaddyj - It's seems like it has been a rough year for everybody's tomato garden. It's weird. If you read all the posts on garden tragedies, they all seem to have something in common - "never had this before" or "worse year ever for this" or "this variety never failed me before". Major drought for most of zones 7 and 8 and it won't stop raining up north. Dr. Carolyn wouldn't know how to act if she got a few days of sunshine. LOL

It is strange - more tragedies than total victories. Everybody has some success stories, but they also have some "not-so-successful" stories. Diseases seem to be rampant.

And now for the bad news....... :>)

gobruno! i decided i would change my mind on the (not very inexpensive) sofas i was about to order ...when i was on the phone with the salesperson! there i was, notes in hand looking at my fabric and layout and WHAM! all of a sudden i heard myself say, "let me call you back!" and i was back online looking at more sofas. and then i did it again ...changed my mind on the banquettes for the breakfast room AND THEN i moved on to my BED! it's a really good thing those are the only pieces i'm getting right now otherwise i'd be nowhere. i'm sure i am settled on the furniture for now and will order NEXT WEEK. ...i think. and i was just thinking this past week i should learn to sew! i'm not convinced i'll be good enough to want to sew my own curtains (always had them made and professionally hung) but then i tell myself "i'm not stupid. surely i can operate a little machine with a foot petal" ...but i have no patience which could impede my ability to take my time and do a good job. at least this was my experience when i had "home ec" in the seventh grade. we made gingham book bags and embroidered our initials on them. THAT is the extent of my experience with a sewing machine. old dog, new tricks? i dunno... how's the sewing going for you???

You can use pork or chicken. I usually do 1/2 shrimp and 1/2 ground pork. These are sooooo good! A lot of work for just me, so I don't make them very often. Shrimp & Vegetable Egg Rolls 2 Tbls vegetable oil 8 cups finely shredded green cabbage 2 cups coarsely grated carrots 2 & 1/2 Tbls soy sauce 3 cloves of garlic, finely minced 1 Tbls ginger, finely minced 6 green onions (or scallions), cut into very thin slices 3/4 lb salad shrimp (can substitute chopped, cooked, chicken) 1/2 cup coarsely chopped fresh cilantro 1/4 cup finely slivered fresh basil Salt - to taste, if needed 12 egg roll wrappers (10 oz) 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 & 1/2 cups vegetable oil 1. In a large, heavy pot, heat the 2 tablespoons of oil. Add the cabbage and carrots; cook over medium-high heat for 3 to 4 minutes, until cabbage is wilted and bright green. Stir in soy sauce. 2. Add the garlic and ginger; cook for 1 minute, stirring. Remove from heat and stir in green onions, shrimp, cilantro, basil and (if desired) salt. 3. When working with egg roll wrappers, cover them with a damp kitchen towel so they dont dry out. Stuff wrappers one at a time: Place one tip facing you like a diamond shape on a flat work surface. Place 1/3 a cup of filling 1 inch from the bottom point and across the wrapper to within 1 inch of each side. Fold bottom tip up over filling and roll away from you halfway up. Brush egg over exposed edges with a pastry brush. Fold in 1 inch side tips and finish rolling TIGHTLY (very important - or egg rolls will absorb more oil and taste ÂgreasyÂ). Place on a plate seam-side down. Repeat procedure with the rest of the wrappers. Keep finished egg rolls covered with a damp towel. 4. Heat 1 & 1/2 cups of oil in a 10 inch skillet until it begins to bubble a bit on top. (To test for temperature, drop a cube of bread into oil; it should brown within one minute). [I use my deep fryer - @ 370 degrees - drop in 3 or 4 egg rolls - cook 1 minute and turn and cook for another minute, or until golden brown.] 5. Add 3 or 4 egg rolls at a time to the oil and fry for 2 to 21/2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Drain on paper towel. Serve immediately. I like mine with ketchup and hot Chinese mustard. Hubby likes his with sweet & sour sauce. (S&S Recipe follows) Makes 12 egg rolls Sweet & Sour Sauce 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1 tablespoon corn starch 1 can (13&1/4 oz) pineapple chunks 1/3 cup vinegar 1 Tbls soy sauce 1 small green pepper, coarsely chopped Mix brown sugar and cornstarch in skillet. Stir in pineapple (with syrup), vinegar and soy sauce. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly; reduce heat. Cover; simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes, or until sauce thickens to your desired thickness. Stir in green pepper. Cover and simmer for about two more minutes. This is the perfect S&S Sauce and can be used for egg rolls, meatballs, chicken, shrimp, fried won-tons, egg foo yong - whatever...

I too am doing well for the most part,hair has grown back and is down over my ears now,not as thick as it was b4,but i can handle that at least i have some.My feet still bother me,that burning,walked on glass shards feeling.However my biggest problem now is my arm,from what i've read on the cancer bd.it looks like i may have Lymphadema in it.I go see the dr on monday.It's swollen and hurts like he**.I can only type for a couple of minutes or use the mouse,so my time on the computor these days is limited,and also can't do any stitching,or sewing,Bummer!! But as they say,"This too shall pass". I've kept the 47 pounds off that i lost during chemo and am now on Femera for almost 5 years,so the weight loss is a Great thing!! Keeping those prayers and good thoughts going up for all of us. Kathi

It's totally dry and barren here, too, It did rain a bit in our area, but not at my garden! just this frustrating "macchia di leopardo" (leopard-spot) stuff,where you get a downpour in one area, but 5 kilometers away, nothing...so frustrating! Anyway,the number one candidate for being watched with both eyes is this darn Charles XII. I have two,planted about the end of 2013: neither has bloomed well so far. But whereas one Chas is off in a spot that I don't always see, Chas no. 2 is in a very prominent spot! so I see the dang thing constantly! It's grow huge in these 2 and a half years, but basically all it's blooms just balled, bull-headed,etc,even this past spring. Now, I know, some climbers take a while, etc, etc, etc. But this thing is in such a prominent spot...I'm going back and forth. I could leave it one more year,since I could replace it with either Annie Laurie McDowell or Joyeuse Farandole ,both of which I have growing in 3-gallon pots. I could leave Chas for one more spring, letting it's replacement roses grow up to a 5 gallon size. But another part of me is just fed up...after all, I DO have space ; I could just move Chas...I think I'll post my own thread asking for opinions; that might help me decide...

Hi Bill, I have already made notes to try the corn meal route next season. And yes I gotta give NAR another shot because when it's good it's great! If it were a lesser variety it would be in the scrap pile though. But still, it's been the trickiest of all for me and I don't like wasting garden space...:)

Yes, I agree. It's been a challenging year for many here. But this NAR seems to be my most fickle variety.

Anyway, Here's to a much better year next year...\_/

Not very.

There are too many good varieties that perform well to waste garden space on slackers. However, if the tomatoes are exceptionally good tasting I'll stick with them.

"How many chances will you give a variety?"
A couple unless it was a bad growing year due to weather.

"If you were me would you invite NAR back to next year's party?"
Based on your descriptions above of on again/off again I'd chuck it, but I'm not you. I grew it this year and got a couple of big ones (+2 pounds) and a bunch of decent sized tomatoes (approximately 1.5 lbs.), but the taste wasn't exceptional. I'll probably grow it one more time and if the taste isn't any better than this year I can see it not making it back to my garden again.

If a variety comes to me highly recommended by someone I know and doesn't perform the first year I'll grow it again a second year.

If a variety comes to me and I know nothing about it except general traits and it's one that isn't available commercially or listed in the SSE Yearbook I may give it more than two chances but so far I haven't had to do that.

And as regards the above the assumption is that the season is OK with respect to weather, which this one hasn't been X 10. So I see Freda replanting ( hope I have enough seeds) most of the same new ones from this season for next season b/c there should have been some real winners out there.

Carolyn, less than proud owner of about 10 fruits from 30 plants. Penta Sigh. Oh, I forgot the 5 black cherries and 1 TN Britches which I was growing just for myself.

The two varieties grown this year are NAR and Black Cherry. The season has been fantastic considering our mini climate near the ocean. Most all the storms have been in the north part of the state. Having heard many positive comments about these two I decided to grow them from seed and now I'm sold. The Neves are ripening and are truly the epitome of size, flavor and texture. The Black Cherry, grown in a whiskey barrel half is beyond description. Everyone who've tasted them are stunned and instantly turn greedy for more. And yes the soil was treated with cornmeal and the early blight is scarce tho' trying to sneak in. Daconil works. Many thanks to all who recommended these varieties and also to the many of you who've shared the growing secrets that made this year so successful. Bless you.

jbann23, that's great you had a good season because those are two great varieties. I too enjoy Black Cherry but gave it the year off here.

Carolyn, now I feel like a shmuck (that spelled right?) complaining about my disease problems this year. I may ONLY get about 750 ripe tomatoes compared to 1,500. But only 11 for you? And only 5 cherries? I'd be ready for 'Garden Rehab' ! LOL And for a variety as wonderful as NAR can be I will go further with it way longer than varieties that were just ho-hum or same-same.

Randy, I pretty much agree with you and I'm by nature not a very patient person when it comes to something like this because my garden space is too valuable to waste like yours is but man I love NAR when it's good but she's a fickle, flirty temptress here where I grow...:)
