i never get orioles or tanagers till last part of april or first part of may. I get the males first i guess setting up their teritorys and a week or two later the females start coming. they all come to the feeders and stock up from their trips and then pair off and start the nests and eggs. then i see either a male eat then later a female until the young fledge. then they start bringing their young one to the feeders

i get the bullocks orioles here instead of the Baltimores but their habits are the same. the males start arriveing last week in april and the females about a week later. they go thru their mating and pair off and start nesting by mid may. to start with both males and females are at the feeders often and eat a lot of jelly and fruit and necter. but as the go off to nest the males and females take turns coming to eat 3 or 4 times a day. by then there are lots of insects and i see them on my garden and flowers catching bugs and insects and grashoppers ect. as soon as the young fledge they start bringing them to the feeders and the young ones eat often covering the feeders. by mid july the males have started leaving and they disappear for the year but the females and their young stay around till mid august to late august and they leave out to head south.

Susan, you may be right that the adult is a male, not a female. Stereotypes die hard, and I'd read that the female can look very similar to the male, so I assumed this bird was the mother. I just checked the Cornell All About Birds Guide, and I looked at some of the other photos I took at the same time. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the female can look similar to the male, but with two white wingbars. "Female Description Variable in appearance. May be similar to male, but head more dark brownish olive than black, and body paler orange. Usually face, throat, and underparts orange. Tail brownish olive, without black. White in shoulder gives it two white wingbars." In these two photos, the second wingbar (shoulder) looks orange, not white, and the tail seems to have black in it. I wonder if the female is also around. Claire

Here in north central Minnesota, in the summertime, we have orioles all at the orange and grape jelly feeders, but this year they were at the hummingbird feeders many times. One morning, a whole family (I assumed) was at a couple of the latter......one strident male and three lesser colored ones that I assumed were the female and young ones that didn't have their bright color yet.
