ID on a large bee? please

Hi all, am hoping some one can ID this large what looks like a bee in my garden?
This insect was very weak & sitting on a groundcover plant in the shade, when I placed the insect in the sun it quickly found another shady place to hide.
The images below were taken today, this insect is approximately 1 inch (or 2.5cm) in length much larger than most usual bees in my yard.
