This summer seemed to be the summer for siskins. All summer I've had about 15-20 siskins in my yard. I have 2 nyger seed feeders and 2 shelled BOSS feeders and they love them all. It's a constant fight for position. So fun to watch and they are such a pretty bird. My small yard was definitely a "fly zone" for siskins. I'll definitely miss them when they leave and go south. The yard will seem so quiet without their constant "zeeee zeee" high up in the air.
last year and this year also i have had pine siskins daily. 15 to 20 at a time this spring summer and fall but last winter had 50 to 60 in 3 different flocks come to the yard all winter. mine are usually after the nyger and millet and boss.
Do you get lots of snow and cold where you live? A book I have says they sometimes stay in my area but I've never seen them in the winter. Their numbers have decreased the last couple of days so I'm thinking that some of them have starting heading south.
i live in the foothills outside of Durango Colorado about 7,000 foot elevation. Most years the siskins stay up in the mountains from spring thru fall and come down to here in the snowy coldest parts of winter. but last two years there are some that stay year around and nest close by and fledged broods this spring. and then there were several large flocks that showed up in the winter and stayed till spring. we do get snow cover on the ground that stays most of Dec. Jan and Feb. and then snow showers up till late march. most local birders say they see them in the pines and spruce and aspen forests in good weather but here i have Juniper and Pinyon and oak brush And they seem to adapt to it here. i put out the small millet seed for the house and gold finches and the siskins eat along with them
Pine siskins love nyjer seed and black oil sunflower seeds. I feed them both. However, I feed them the shelled sunflower seeds as I find they dump out more of the unshelled ones than they eat, probably looking for the smaller seeds. According to the Cornell map, you only get siskins in the winter. Try putting out a nyjer feeder. If they are in your area, they will come.
