I love watching the black-headed grosbeaks at my feeders, but they are very shy. If I even walk by the window, they fly off. The females seem a little bit braver than the males.

Nice photo. I've never seen a Black-headed Grosbeak, we only get the Rose-breasted type here, and I've only seen one of those once or twice.

I've never seen the rose-breasted ones around here. I wonder if they are as shy as the black-breasted grosbeaks? It's frustrating trying to watch these guys, the way they fly off as soon as they see me. LOL

Congrats on those photos! Claire, I'm thinking the male looks a bit juvenile still...he's got brown spots on his top back. The mature one we had at our feeder didn't have any speckling like that on his black part. The underbelly didn't have any speckling either. Great pictures! We have the Orioles here in southwest Missouri, but so far, no Grosbeaks. I had them very briefly last year. I just put jelly on a flat saucer on a patio table right outside the window where the computer is so I can watch them. I take most pictures through the window. I took the screen off for the summer. The table might be 6 feet from where I watch. Lots of fun.

with the red eye and rufous side i would have to say eastern towhee male. can't see the tail but they have a long sparrow tail and they love to dig around under shrubs and trees scattering leaves and needles about.

The angle of that pic sure makes the beak look shorter and thicker. It does have the darker plumage pattern of a young male Redwing, though. You may never get a chance but, the way we used to sex immature Redwings, was that immature males have large black legs and feet, even when they are still in the nest. By the time they are the age of the one in your pic, they should have very faint red feathers in their shoulders. It is often hidden. though.

here its different i have evening grosbeaks and blackheaded grosbeaks both nest close by here and they bring thir young to my feeders and at this time i have close to a dozen young grosbeaks comimg and going all day and i stand at the kitchen window watching them from just a few feet away. they do get more flighty as they get older though.
