Orioles skittish?

I just put out an Oriole feeder with jelley and orange combo last night. I was sitting in the backyard and am fairly certain I saw an Oriole in the neighbors tree. My seeting area is about 30 feet away as I watch the feeders. Are the Orioles to skittish to come to the feeder that close or will they get use to me.

The orioles that come to our hummingbird feeder won't let a person come within 50' of them. They are very skittish. The male is any way. The female isn't quite as bad. The only way to get a close look is through an opening in the vertical blinds. They can't see us that way.

i have the Bullocks orioles here, There are three pairs of them that had nests nearby this spring. I watch them thru a window on the back yard, The feeders are about 10 feet away. If i don't move or make any noise they are ok but the least movement they are gone. Now i have about eleven fledglings big enough to fly well and they are feeding from daylight till dark and have not learned to be skitish yet. I go thru 2 quarts of sugar water a day and 2 cups of orange juice and several pieces each of watermelon and cantalope and cherry ect.
They have already learned to fight with each other over which gets to drink first.

Cedar rust requires two hosts - anything in the apple family and the cedar family. After the gall from the cedar tree releases it spores, it grows on the apple trees which release their spores to form new cedar galls. I planted three crabapple trees which are supposed to be cedar-rust resistant, they still get a little fungus on them but not enough to really hurt them. CT - I was thinking blue-eyed grass! I don't know what I was thinking but we call that the century plant. I have some too and yes they do reseed easily although I would not call them invasive. I found one growing in our unmowed area with the wild grass. I took them to a plant swap last year at work and one of the swappers brought plants in this year that had seeded from the plant I gave her. Mine are planted on a hot, dry hill and do fine. I have moles too, lots of them! And I love wildlife too but I draw the line at moles and voles. I don't do anything to repel them though, they are just a fact of life for me. A couple of years before the brood X cicada emergence they got huge! The size of large baking potatoes! Which apparently is not unusual, they start eating the nymphs in the last couple of years before the emergence as they work their way to the top. What I hate is when I am working in the garden and all of a sudden earthworms come up out of the ground by the dozens and I can hear the mole digging his tunnel. Luckily as the soil dries out they tend to go deeper and the tunnels aren't as bad. Back to the garden!

Sept. 27: A juvenile male hummingbird stopped by! This is the feeder on my deck. I was sitting out there and the hummer was OK with me being there but got spooked when I pulled out the camera so I didn't get a good shot of the whole head and throat. Pixie Lou, I love those pond shots. You get such a range of critters visiting, and the green heron is especially nice. It has finally warmed up enough that Jane's least favorite critters are emerging in my garden, the snakes. I found a small (8") red-bellied snake that ended up in some grass clippings I moved to the compost after we hayed the lawn between rain showers. I was surprised to find him in the bottom of the garden cart, and tipped him out before I thought to photograph him. My reading tells me that they don't get much bigger than a big night crawler, so he was full grown. I was cleaning out the bed around the back patio where I so often see garter snakes, and had the company of this guy for a bit until he decided that I was interfering with his basking in the sun and left.

Thanks everyone. It's so nice to have people to share my birding events with. Sue, I'm happy you're getting to enjoy the cardinals, too. They also relish the black oil sunflower seed, but then, so do the grackles. I'm fortunate in that I have very few grackles; right now I have 2-4 of them hanging around but I don't see them often. There are more here for a week or so during the spring and fall migrations. I take the BOSS and suet feeders down at those time. Lynn D, after Ms. Cardinal left, I called my Auntie in Arkansas to tell her about the sighting. As we were talking on the phone I could hear her cardinals singing the "purty purty purty" song. HappyTime CA...once "my" cardinals are established (I might as well dream big!) you'll just have to take a road trip and come out to visit them. Stick around Jaime LA. "We'll" get you hooked! If you could come out and watch just one nest check with the tiny Purple Martin hatchlings, you'd be a goner for sure! LOL NodakGal...You're welcome to come for "tea!" It's Lipton's finest, but I guess you can tell I did get wild and added some fresh lemon zest! Peg MN...When I was a child there was a large holly shrub next to my north-facing bedroom window. One year a cardinal pair made thier nest there. It was in the perfect place for me to be able to watch them from just a few inches away. They didn't seem to mind me peering through the window's sheer curtains.

Fun to watch aren't they? I have Bullocks and Hooded Orioles here but they have started to migrate already. The males of both species left before the end of July and the females and young are gradually following.

I had Baltimore Orioles at my jelly feeder during June. They since have left. I had my feeder right next to our deck, and it didn't stop them one bit. We would sit and watch them eat the jelly. The catbird is still doing the same thing.

What a change here this last week. The males all left first.
The females and the young ones are leaving over last few days, The nights have really cooled off recently.
I had three adult pairs and around 11 young ones hatched last spring. yesterday and today only see about 5 young ones still here. The hummingbirds are feeding almost continously at the feeders and i suppose they will disappear soon also.
