I'm getting really concerned ...

The participation on this board has dwindled to almost nothing. In the past there were at least a handful (maybe a dozen) of the faithfuls that hung around here but even they have seemed to have disappeared! Maybe you could say that's normal as the participation rises and falls with the camping season, but I don't recall it ever being this slow.

And there's been some great information that's been shared here, at least for me anyway. Some ideas and thoughts posted here I would have never known about, maybe.

What has me concerned is awhile back, maybe three years ago or so, there use to be another board here on Nature.Net exclusive to canoes and kayaks which went great guns for awhile and then just dropped off to maybe a post every other month (if even that!) and resulted in it just being dropped. I sure hope that does'nt happen to this camping fourm as I've really enjoy the information that's been posted in the past which has just about touched on every type of camping.

I'm still here. Working with my boy to graduate to Boy Scouts, so there is still a lot of talk about camping in our home, even though it is a tad cool outside. For Christmas he's getting a Eureka Backcountry Outfitter 4 tent I found on big sale (Eureka is discontinuing them).

By the way, Eureka now lists their 2006 line of tents at http://www.eurekacamping.com ... not very impressive, at least to me. Not sure what is going on with them.

"Shoot it out to my webspace' for example", what does that mean? Sorry, my parlance for uploading to my webspace with the emphasis on getting it done quickly and efficiently plus best of all I'm used to it and can do more with it like make my own directories and folders on the other end, delete, etc., without logging in and going there to do it. My freebie FTP uploader I got years ago still works! Even to submit my photos to WHCC for processing but not Walgreens, there you have to use the browse. I use it so often it's right on my start menu, works as stand alone. You can buy spiffier versions (why clutter up my hd if it ain't broke?) and some places want you to download and install theirs. Every website has its own specific host name and ftp address. Honestly, I don't know all the nuts and bolts, just what I need to know to do what I want to do. I don't use it to sell anything but wanted that option at the time. Whatever you download an install on your computer, there are no guarantees that they will do a clean uninstall which is why I don't dl anything I don't really need or want. Stand alone software, of which there is very little, works without getting into my registry and countless other places on my hd. Everything I have, I don't know if it will do a clean uninstall or not, including my anti-viral software. Using your own "webspace" sounds good but what is it? My own domain name which I have to renew every two years and my own .com (the actual space alotted in megabytes or gigabytes). For just here and smaller things I can just use the free space I'm given with my ISP subscription if I want. The reason I like it, is I don't want my photos resized on the host end (I don't notice significant deterioration in image quality when photobucket does it). I prepare them at the quality I want, the size I want and prefer them displayed that way. I have complete control over presentation, have several slideshows using what software I want, that kind of thing. I can say what I want (within limits). I don't display on the web anything other than family-type stuff, but I like to have control over format, size, content, etc. I know some give you a lot of leeway and are even free. I have no problem with others' choices, but it is most annoying when one of the many photo hosting sites is down, one well-known one chronically, and where the photos should be is a red x; once in awhile, it is not a problem. Maybe that one is better now. For just occasional posting of photos like here, I don't recommend going the route I did. And I don't sell anything from my site but wanted to leave that option open.

Ed sounded hopeful. I sent him a pic of the eye and the roots. He said it looked real promising from what he saw. Good color, firm. And roots look good and he couldn't see any signs of crown rot, not bacterial rot as no bad odor. But he said it's hard to kill a hosta. And they can bounce back from anything, anything but rot. But if you get it off the good parts in time, it has a chance. I am hopeful. I am going to reorder her though. Any suggestions on a good place to order from that is not in Minnesota and still frozen? Orange Marmalade was just all mush. No visible eye any longer. As was Fire and Ice. But I hear F&I is not an easy one anyway, either, like Dream Queen. I calculated my losses, w/o including Luna Moth yet, I am at 35%!!! Ed said I am not to blame it was just we were hit with ice and snow bam, bam, bam. And it was heavy and sometimes it just can't take all that. Here's a pic of my current arrangement on and around patio. I put the patio babies up on bricks and stands so the sun hits them for longer. And I moved the ones in deep shade, because they need it the most, over to all day direct sun for now because they have good eyes but they are the least amount of growth showing, so I am forcing them out of dormancy, if you will, like the other lady.

pshaw.. you could have left them on the driveway.. boy its good to say that.. its been a while.. lol ... the only issue with late planting.. and no snow or lack thereof .. is heating of the dark soil on sunny days.. which could lead to heave in the great white north later in winter ... a dormant plant is dormant.. and if kept dormant.. there are no issues ... its when they start going back and forth in and out of dormancy ... that problems might start ... thaw of surface soil on sunny days.. could hurt the tiny plants.. whose roots might not remain deep in the cold soil.. and those are also the ones ... if recently planted.. that can heave ... birds eat slugs... and no snow cover might actually reduce slugs next year.. i dont know.. its as viable a theory as otherwise ... once the ground is frozen.. the bags of mulch would be great ... but insure they get off in march ... if water accumulation is a problem ... they cant get sodden .... and lack oxygen... in my sand.. i could probably leave the bags there until may .. to keep the plants dormant longer .. to avoid frost.... but i dont know if that would be wise on clay ... they are hosta.. the only thing to watch for.. is spring on the calender ... otherwise.. i wouldnt worry too much about hosta ... too many peeps are worriers.. and my point is simple.. dont worry about hosta .... ken ps: wouldnt lack of snow.. reduce vole issues????

I'm all for culling... I do it myself - I used to throw poor achievers down the bank at the back of the house where they could become part of the forest floor. Nowadays, I pass any half decent plants to a friend to see if her nutritious soil can breathe additional life back into them. Only one comment... I've heard a few say that Invincible is far from it, when grown in the ground (slugs love it, gets ratty soon). I can't speak to that, but I've had mine in pots for a dozen years or so, and they've been really reliable performers. This year wasn't their greatest since they were hit by hail on three separate occasions early in the season, yet they still produced enough new leaves to look respectable. If you have a pot available,you could try a new environment! It's much harder work for the slugs! Alternatively, if you do toss it, might I suggest Irish Luck from the same family (if you don't already have it). I haven't had mine long (not through lack of trying or wanting), but it seems to have a better reputation than Invincible. Anyhow, I don't mean to throw you off your decisive course of action. There's too many fabulous plants out there to be nursing, or simply accommodating those that don't bring you sufficient satisfaction. BC

anyone know of any good campgrounds in Florida that accept pop-ups (hard sided) would want to stay for a month or more..

I'm here, just not much to say that I haven't already said three hundred times before...LOL I am still camping most every weekend, it has been really cold out too, but sitting by the fire with it blazing sure helps. I am still convinced getting the trailer was the best thing I've done in a long time. Now, we go all year and can sleep in a warm bed but enjoy the outdoors whenever we want. We have been enjoying a bunch of deer that munch every evening when we are there right across from our site in the field. ALso, been seeing a lot of wild life that we don't see "in season". This is the best time of yr. to camp, no people, no noise, lots of animals roaming around. As long as you can tolerate the cold, try it. Camping in the snow is awesome, so beautiful. We have been getting a lot of pictures. Have a wonderful holiday season to all my fellow campers.

I lurk here often. But the Camping area here got misplaced & I didn't think I was going to find it.

We have only been camping 3 times this year. My DH spent several days in the hospital & when we were able to get
away, I was called back to my job for a little while.

We started out camping in a tent, moved to an Apache hard side camper & now a fifth wheel. Would like to find a good place to boondock here in the Southeast (NO, not Walmart's parking lot!!).

I started monitoring this site about 5-6 years ago when my family and myself started to get back into camping. Not diehards like some, but we usually go a few times a year trying to merge it in an interesting area with other activites.

I'd hate to think that the interest has vanished. So much information has been shared on this site, whether equipment or geographically related, it would be shame to see it fall by the wayside. Use to post here and get a few responses within hours. Not so anymore.

I posted a concern like yours last year and again a few months ago. Not much feedback. I even tried a couple of "What's your favorite camping tip?" to stir interest. First one worked well, not much response for the second so I posted one with a hundred so tips just to share.

Maybe, HOPEFULLY, everyone's camping somewhere in this vast country where the wireless signal just can't reach.

Its not that folks have given up on camping--its the cost of the gasoline to get there!
Although----My motor home gets 10-12 MPG, but i have some places i am going this summer, come H--- or high water! Got it safety inspected yesterday, got some things done today on it, have lots to do yet to make it ready to go! It WILL be ready! If it stops raining!
Won't be any long trips, unless some rich unknown relative croaks and leaves me his fortune! Know what is a "fat chance"? Or if we win on "Deal or no deal"!
Probably trips of 50 to 100 miles will be the norm for me! There's lots of bluegrass music being played near Pittsburgh, so i can get to those shows, and jamms!
So, enjoy the summer--go take a trip--its only money--if ya don't spend it, some politician will dream up some way to get it off ya!

Yeah, wazzup campers? Where ya been, where ya going? Got any gear tips? I need a new tent but don't want to spend alot, new stove but don't know how sure I can get iso-propane fuel-type-thingies reliably.

I'm nursing a leg injury, so I'm sidelined for awhile, can't wait to get back out though.

To Mulchlady: Yes, here's a good tip!
don't drive in Chicago! Camp outside of town, near a bus stop, and keep your vehicle out of Chicago! Its a madhouse of drivers, so i'm told!

Some of the best information on this site is about proper rifles and pistols for protecting yourself from bears & cougars in camp. Beyond that, it's just hallucinations from people who are breathing way too much coal dust! : )
