I'm getting really concerned ...

The participation on this board has dwindled to almost nothing. In the past there were at least a handful (maybe a dozen) of the faithfuls that hung around here but even they have seemed to have disappeared! Maybe you could say that's normal as the participation rises and falls with the camping season, but I don't recall it ever being this slow.

And there's been some great information that's been shared here, at least for me anyway. Some ideas and thoughts posted here I would have never known about, maybe.

What has me concerned is awhile back, maybe three years ago or so, there use to be another board here on Nature.Net exclusive to canoes and kayaks which went great guns for awhile and then just dropped off to maybe a post every other month (if even that!) and resulted in it just being dropped. I sure hope that does'nt happen to this camping fourm as I've really enjoy the information that's been posted in the past which has just about touched on every type of camping.

I'm still here. Working with my boy to graduate to Boy Scouts, so there is still a lot of talk about camping in our home, even though it is a tad cool outside. For Christmas he's getting a Eureka Backcountry Outfitter 4 tent I found on big sale (Eureka is discontinuing them).

By the way, Eureka now lists their 2006 line of tents at http://www.eurekacamping.com ... not very impressive, at least to me. Not sure what is going on with them.

If you think your plants are too wet, you can use a little science to help you fix it. Try inserting a wick into the drain hole & allow it to dangle beneath the pot bottom. Tilting the plant at a 45* angle when soils are soggy changes the shape of the soil occupied by perched water and actually reduces the amount of perched water the soil CAN hold, often forcing quite a bit of excess water to drain from the pot. If your plants are small enough, hold them over the sink & move them downward toward the sink and then smartly upward. The rapid reversal in direction from downward to upward employs Newton's First Law of Motion to help drain the pot. If the root/soil mass can be lifted from the pot intact - just remove the plant & set it on a stack of newspapers, towels, etc, for 5 minutes & all the perched water will be removed. Just a bit of an update, but he passed away yesterday afternoon. Took a really sudden turn for the worse. My only theory is that the white stringy feces had to be internal parasites, and that he was in such an advanced stage of infection when I bought him that the medication came too late. But I picked up some of the Jungle Parasite Clear tablets that I've seen alot of people swear by just as a precaution in case Tiger starts to show similar symptoms, heaven forbid he does. Took the dearly departed back to the store and they let me replace him, since he obviously wasn't well. Qaurentining the new one in the bowl he came home in, seperated, until I know for sure he's fine. Hopefully there won't be a repeat scenario, but if on the off chance there is, I think I'm just going to pull the divider out and let Tiger have the whole tank to himself.

1) they need vitamin S - Shade until they get established. you can't expect any transplanted plants to perform without problems in full sun immediately after being transplanted. They need some shade for a while until they're established. 2) I don't know who recommended lantanas for hanging pots, but from what I know, lantanas belong in the ground, and hanging pots belong somewhere up north. How big are these pots? and how do you plan to keep them watered in the summer when they dry out super fast? Lantanas are super tough plants, especially when they're planted in the ground, because they develop an extensive root system that goes deep and all over the place which is why they are drought resistant. In a pot, those roots have nowhere to go.

I normally use the 14.5 oz size...but my cornbread pan a deep dish baker pan from Pampered Chef is a little bigger than the one noted in the recipe. If this size can seemed too much for yours, you could add another piece of white bread...be aware...this recipe makes a very moist, light colored dressing, browned mostly around the outside next to the sides of the crock pot....if you prefer a dryer dressing,,,I have used the same recipe and baked it in a 9x13 piece of stoneware from Pampered Chef at somewhere between 345 & 350...how long? until it is lightly browned on top and around the edges...know your oven and adjust as needed. Another hint, I decrease the eggs to two and mix in my cornbread when I bake it! Four eggs is just a little eggy for my family and honestly, I forgot them all together last time...no one noticed except me as I cleaned up kitchen and couldn't find my egg shells.... This memory thing is getting a little much! Must be "sometimers" setting in!

anyone know of any good campgrounds in Florida that accept pop-ups (hard sided) would want to stay for a month or more..

I'm here, just not much to say that I haven't already said three hundred times before...LOL I am still camping most every weekend, it has been really cold out too, but sitting by the fire with it blazing sure helps. I am still convinced getting the trailer was the best thing I've done in a long time. Now, we go all year and can sleep in a warm bed but enjoy the outdoors whenever we want. We have been enjoying a bunch of deer that munch every evening when we are there right across from our site in the field. ALso, been seeing a lot of wild life that we don't see "in season". This is the best time of yr. to camp, no people, no noise, lots of animals roaming around. As long as you can tolerate the cold, try it. Camping in the snow is awesome, so beautiful. We have been getting a lot of pictures. Have a wonderful holiday season to all my fellow campers.

I lurk here often. But the Camping area here got misplaced & I didn't think I was going to find it.

We have only been camping 3 times this year. My DH spent several days in the hospital & when we were able to get
away, I was called back to my job for a little while.

We started out camping in a tent, moved to an Apache hard side camper & now a fifth wheel. Would like to find a good place to boondock here in the Southeast (NO, not Walmart's parking lot!!).

I started monitoring this site about 5-6 years ago when my family and myself started to get back into camping. Not diehards like some, but we usually go a few times a year trying to merge it in an interesting area with other activites.

I'd hate to think that the interest has vanished. So much information has been shared on this site, whether equipment or geographically related, it would be shame to see it fall by the wayside. Use to post here and get a few responses within hours. Not so anymore.

I posted a concern like yours last year and again a few months ago. Not much feedback. I even tried a couple of "What's your favorite camping tip?" to stir interest. First one worked well, not much response for the second so I posted one with a hundred so tips just to share.

Maybe, HOPEFULLY, everyone's camping somewhere in this vast country where the wireless signal just can't reach.

Its not that folks have given up on camping--its the cost of the gasoline to get there!
Although----My motor home gets 10-12 MPG, but i have some places i am going this summer, come H--- or high water! Got it safety inspected yesterday, got some things done today on it, have lots to do yet to make it ready to go! It WILL be ready! If it stops raining!
Won't be any long trips, unless some rich unknown relative croaks and leaves me his fortune! Know what is a "fat chance"? Or if we win on "Deal or no deal"!
Probably trips of 50 to 100 miles will be the norm for me! There's lots of bluegrass music being played near Pittsburgh, so i can get to those shows, and jamms!
So, enjoy the summer--go take a trip--its only money--if ya don't spend it, some politician will dream up some way to get it off ya!

Yeah, wazzup campers? Where ya been, where ya going? Got any gear tips? I need a new tent but don't want to spend alot, new stove but don't know how sure I can get iso-propane fuel-type-thingies reliably.

I'm nursing a leg injury, so I'm sidelined for awhile, can't wait to get back out though.

To Mulchlady: Yes, here's a good tip!
don't drive in Chicago! Camp outside of town, near a bus stop, and keep your vehicle out of Chicago! Its a madhouse of drivers, so i'm told!

Some of the best information on this site is about proper rifles and pistols for protecting yourself from bears & cougars in camp. Beyond that, it's just hallucinations from people who are breathing way too much coal dust! : )
