Hey Rusty,

Sorry for the delay. Yeah we weathered Sandy. Didn't get our power turned on for a couple of weeks, but my back neighbors had power so we hooked up our fridge heat and communications to their outdoor outlets. Worked out well so I can't complain. Pretty much back to normal except that enormous stump from the felled oak is still there. My mom's house was a block from a lake that's connected to Jamaica Bay and, unfortunately, received about a half a foot of water on the first floor. She passed away a year ago so she was spared the anxiety of it all. The other issue was that the house was in closing and had a committed buyer. Thank goodness they still want it so closing's just been postponed. Walls had to be stripped 4 feet from the floor level, appliances malfunction to be replaced, new carpeting, etc, etc. My blessed mom was responsible enough to have flood insurance, without which, this whole ordeal would have been a financial nightmare. The buyers will probably get a better house for it and maybe we'll make a couple of bucks on the side.
Rusty, that's the latest, we'll spare any health issues (nothing major) for the time being and sign off on a positive note. Hopefully you and the Mrs are stable enjoying a mellow everyday is Sunday type of existence.

Elliot: We didn't have any thing from Sandy, but we are enjoying some warmish weather right now. And some rain.
Wife isn't doing so good. She's not well, but does manage to do some meals, and watch TV. Can't leave her oxygen tank for long. I can get out to my Bluegrass jam sessions every week, and up to the Fire Hall for meetings, but thats about it.
Well, i hope you have a nice Christmas and new year! May things go well for you and family.

You're welcome Gean. The same holds true for written information. Originally, all we had to believe were the British catalogs proclaiming Graham Thomas as a "mannerly five foot shrub", which it CAN be in the right climate. Here in SoCal, he can be a fifteen foot climber! Beales wrote Ballerina is our most reliable small poly, though it nearly reaches the eaves of a two story house in this climate. He also wrote that New Dawn is their reliable, smaller climber. OK, not in the land of endless summer! As with everything else, location, location, location means everything. One of the reasons why the zone information on our identifications here on GW is so important. As I said, it isn't fool proof, but it can sure give you some VERY good direction. Kim

My oldest Stormy weather is, I think, 2 years old. I guess maybe I just have to wait longer; but then again, I gather you are in CA, so quite a different climate. About how tall were the pillared ones you saw? Mine rebloom quite well, they are just short. As for Night Owl, I have had my oldest for, I think, 4 years, and it is short; maybe 3 ft tall.

Ingrid - so glad you are finally getting some rain! Your garden must be so happy. We have had 3 rain storms in the past 4 days, and fourth one is supposed to come in tonight, and another one tomorrow night. Yay! We have now gotten our "annual normal" (7/1 -7/1) amount of rain (35 inches), and it is still Jan! I grew up here, and can remember many winters like this, although of course not lately. The other afternoon we went to a nearby shopping mall (they recently re-did it to make it a covered mall, luckily) to see a movie. When the movie got out, we walked to the mall entrance nearest our car, and looked out (with a bunch of people who were standing by the doors). Ha! The rain was coming down so hard, and the wind was blowing so hard, that the rain was horizontal, and you could barely see. There was no way we were going to try to get to our car, which was only about 40 feet away. We waited 5 minutes, on the grounds that it must be a "cloud burst" which would stop, but it did not stop. So, dinner plans were changed, and we had dinner at a restaurant which was inside of the mall. The heavy heavy rain continued for another 1 1/2 hours, until we were done with dinner, and then stopped long enough for us to get home. Fun adventure! In the northern Sierra Nevada mountains, which are about 5 hours by car East of here, they are getting at least 4-6 feet of snow every other day. I am so happy to hear from you that So Cal is getting rain too - they said a few days ago that that part of the state was still under severe drought - hope it keeps up! Jackie

jc_7a_ I live in zone 8 on Vancouver Island. My home city of Nanaimo lies in a mountain rainshadow, so we get three month long droughts during summer. Added to this, my soil is rocky, sandy reclaimed forest dirt. Very good drainage. So in my growing conditions, Stormy Weather does not like southwest exposure. Other planting conditions may differ? But the older thread I stumbled upon, had several people experiencing the same problem with this rose. Namely it fries in the sun. Flowers literally crisp up and go crunchy brown.
