Greetings! Site seems to move a bit slowly and I am stretching the Camping end of it as I am mostly posting hiking threads. Thank you for your patience and wonderful responses!! This is a wonderful, friendly, informative site with great contributors. tip O' the hat to Nature.net and it's moderators. Top drawer.

I will miss you all!!

My name is jerry, RUSTIPUP is my little dachshund.

I live in St. George, Utah and am in the phone book under Gerald Reber if any of you come out to Redrock country here in Southern Utah and want to visit Zion, Bryce, Arizona Strip, and many of the fantastic places in my backyard. I am humbled and in awe of this stark, lonely, amazing place where the Mojave collides with the Great Basin and the Colorado Plateau.

Hey Jerry ... were are you going?

I've been wanting to make a trip out that way now for over five years. Wanted to hitch-up the little Starcraft popup camper and just wander over there and over here, stoping off to see whatever; and maybe wetting a fishing line at some good looking spot. If it has not been one thing, it's been another to keep me from it, all the way from some health issues to the price of gasoline! Are there any good trout fishing streams in your neck-of-the-woods?

Just took a peek to see whats been going on in here, you can't go!!! I love seeing all of your pictures from all of the great places you get to explore. You are such an awesome contributor to this site. I have been so busy with work that by the time I get home, the last thing I want to do is log back onto the computer. I have been checking in from time to time from work when not busy though. I have been spending every weekend at the campground still. This is the best time to be there, no bugs, no people, just a warm fire, the prettiest color of the sky, the still of the water, the wonderful array of animals too. Every night around 5 or 6 we have a small group of 6 deer that came to the field acorss from our site about 100 ft away and eat. We love watching them when we are there. Also, there have been a lot of ducks flying south after stopping in the lake for a drink or a swim. Fall, the best time of year.
Jerry, please stay.

If it's inset, the door won't actually be 24 inches, so I think you would be fine. For the island, if you want it more open then maybe you should lose the shelf. What about making a drawer on top deep enough for a second drawer inside? So you have one drawer front with two shallow drawers inside, there have been seval examples posted here lately. That would give you more space for small prep tools, foil/wraps, trivets, utensils, etc and capture back a little of the space lost by having one shelf underneath as only so much of that height will be useful space.

Nathan, I was only hoping to spark an idea. I really hoped someone might see a way to incorporate your desires for the prep and cooking to be facing towards your guests. I realize it is petty much impossible to pull off with your size constraints. You mostly see that on the cooking channel with a tv set kitchen and no huge range hood blocking and making noise. I think you need to have way more space then you have unfortunately. :-( If you do like the general placement of the sink and range open concept like you want, I think you probably would need to bump out that whole nook/great room wall a few more feet towards the veranda in order to get the proper clearances for the range. You'd need to get professional advice on that. Here is an old thread, but Greendesigns explains very well about cooktops on a peninsula. http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/2698245/cooktop-on-peninsula-really-an-issue?n=39 Basically you will need a very powerful hood that is bigger then the actual cooktop. Even wider then the recommended 6" wider if it is just against the wall with cabinets. That equates to $$$$$! I reread what GreenDesigns actually said as far as spinning the island to make it a peninsula. She said move the range to the "back wall", so obviously not the crazy spinout I did. haha! I admit didn't read very well this thread late last night. I do know she is a very experienced Kitchen Designer. I think there are several others who post here on GW. I remember, Live wire oak, Sophie, Jakuval, Kompy aka the kitchen place, and probably a few more I am sorry I forget right now. So if in your research you see those names take note. Buehl, Mamagoose, Cpartist, funkycamper, lavenderlass, benjesbride, Jillius, Sena, and oh so many more my brain cannot think, they also could be KD's they are so good at this. Cpartist, I agree your layout and every other layout presented is far far better. Yeah, duh! I just am curious as to why you said it was a one person kitchen. I thought a one butt kitchen meant the chef was unable to do his or her thang without other people getting in the way. For instance, a second helper cleaning up at the dw or prepping at a secondary area would be completely impossible. I have much to learn, so when I get time I'll try and research more on that, Well, at least with the info you've been given, I know you will get a much better kitchen Nathan. I see a number of problems with your layout. Your aisle width is too narrow. I'm going to assume that they measured cabinet to cabinet and not counter to counter. So 42" will really be narrower. I widened the aisle to make it now 3'10" which will give you enough breathing room. The way you had it if more than one of you are working in the kitchen at the same time, it will be too tight and can be dangerous if you're at the cooktop and someone needs to get by you. This now gives enough room to walk behind or even for one to be at the island cleaning up and for you to be cooking. However that now made it a pinch point behind where the seating was. So to accommodate the difference, I made the island a bit narrower, which removed one stool. Then I flipped the ovens with the appliance storage. This also allows the food to come out of the oven and walk it around to the table or counter, without bumping into someone using the fridge to get out last minute condiments, etc. To keep your counters "even" so the cooktop looks centered, I moved the cooktop over a bit towards the fridge/freezer. All this takes away the crowded feeling in where the ovens/fridge/freezer where.

If these items were not listed as options, or itemized at $0 on a price sheet at the time you signed a contract with this information, then yes, the builder has essentially included them. Builders are constantly adding options or changing pricing, or "standard features" and it is up to the salesperson to convey this info to prospective buyers, even if it uncomfortable. When I sold new homes with a reputable national builder it was always "prices subject to change" UNTILL the contract was signed, which locked in any prices and options, until any change orders were executed. I worked with another builder who was constantly trying to screw buyers by deciding that features were now optional, that had been standard, without telling us first. Can you imagine the embarrassment to have the boss inform the buyer in front of me that the window styles in the model were actually upgrades after working there for months and they weren't before. You need to have a calm discussion with your builder.

I'm much too old to think of coming out your way any more! I was out there in 1947, and did see a lot of the western states, and the attractions! Then i got married, and my wife had no interest in traveling thru the Rockies, nor seeing the Grand Canyon! (She always thought she'd have an uncontrollable urge to jump over the edge, but i told her she'd not feel much pain if she did!) So, we traveled thru the eastern half of the country!
One thing i remember about California--those people either aren't too bright, or they have a great sense of humor! We saw this sign outside a hot dog shop:

Needless to say, we lost our appetite! (But, i have a picture i took of that sign!)
And, we didn't go thru Las Vegas! Afraid my cousin Bob would get stuck there gambling, and lose all!

Jerry, We certainly don't want to see a great contributor leave us! You visit a lot of places that most of us can only dream about. Me, I'm a hiker too; have over one hundred hikes under my belt and have a hiking stick with lots of wear to prove it. I've kept a journal, so I know how many I've been on. It's fun to read back over it and reminisce about some of the things that happened on some the hikes and that just sets me on fire to go again!

As I said, we don't want to lose you, but if you must leave the forum please check in from time to time and let us know what you're up to.

Hi guys! I haven't been around much myself lately! I just logged on but just have not had time! Life has not been easy this past year but I think about everybody here. Eventually, I'll be back with my stories! In the meantime, Jerry, I would really miss your photos if you stay away!

If you do read this and never come back to post, please consider framing some of your work! It's very artistic. Also, thank you for helping my daughter with her social studies project last year!
