Greetings! Site seems to move a bit slowly and I am stretching the Camping end of it as I am mostly posting hiking threads. Thank you for your patience and wonderful responses!! I will miss you all!!

My name is jerry, RUSTIPUP is my little dachshund.

I live in St. George, Utah and am in the phone book under Gerald Reber if any of you come out to Redrock country here in Southern Utah and want to visit Zion, Bryce, Arizona Strip, and many of the fantastic places in my backyard. I am humbled and in awe of this stark, lonely, amazing place where the Mojave collides with the Great Basin and the Colorado Plateau.

Hey Jerry ... were are you going?

I've been wanting to make a trip out that way now for over five years. Wanted to hitch-up the little Starcraft popup camper and just wander over there and over here, stoping off to see whatever; and maybe wetting a fishing line at some good looking spot. If it has not been one thing, it's been another to keep me from it, all the way from some health issues to the price of gasoline! Are there any good trout fishing streams in your neck-of-the-woods?

Just took a peek to see whats been going on in here, you can't go!!! I love seeing all of your pictures from all of the great places you get to explore. You are such an awesome contributor to this site. I have been so busy with work that by the time I get home, the last thing I want to do is log back onto the computer. I have been checking in from time to time from work when not busy though. I have been spending every weekend at the campground still. This is the best time to be there, no bugs, no people, just a warm fire, the prettiest color of the sky, the still of the water, the wonderful array of animals too. Every night around 5 or 6 we have a small group of 6 deer that came to the field acorss from our site about 100 ft away and eat. We love watching them when we are there. Also, there have been a lot of ducks flying south after stopping in the lake for a drink or a swim. Fall, the best time of year.

I like round tables. To me, they are more friendly, seem to encourage conversation and its easier to squish in one more person. There are also wine tables - they are a little more oval in shape. === these are just comments on the design, not fatal errors You might want to know the effective size of the aisle between the island and the south wall (as drawn) containing your pantry cabinets. It's lookin' kinda 36" when the counter is included. This aisle will be a very active hallway in your kitchen - people will go in and out of the pantry cabinets. People also to/fro the refrigerator from the table seating and the stools. It's a short distance but could gum up the works in another way. Because the cabinet/ref arrangement can congest that corner (imagine the pantry open, the ref open and someone comes through the side entrance on their way to the stools), there is a pretty decent chance that the aisle in front of the range will become a hallway also. This chance is increased because dish storage in on the other side of the room - not bad in and of itself, but kids swinging through to microwave something may need to go back and forth to the dishes/water. It's hard to tell because I can't see where the microwave is located. Remedies are as simple as exchanging a cabinet in the island for one with 3-6" less width. Another would be to push back the mudroom wall 3-6". Will you have cleaning stuff in the mudroom? Do you need a mop sink there? Depending on your climate, consider cutting down the pass through to the butler's pantry in exchange for a hanging rail with hooks for outdoor wear. I'd also suggest looking yet again at the dining room/old butlers/new butlers/new exterior entries bunch of stuff. Lots of little spaces there with lotta doors and unusable space. Could it be made simpler with less doors/hall way and space devoted to transitions? The answer may be no, but that's where I'd push the designer of the entire project to reconsider. The link is to some interesting kitchens from a spanish design team called Deulonder. They pack an amazing amount of practical stuff tucked into "small" spaces. It's not so you would re-evaluate your entire project but you might see something that appeals to you for how to treat that area. It sounds like they may be trying to educate you on the standard way they build cabinets, but it is possible to use all solid wood. Cost would most likely be affected though. Every pre-finished cabinet line I have worked with, high end or low, has a disclaimer form they require to be signed by the cabinet dealer and the customer stating that you understand the properties of a painted finish. It has to be sent in with the order or else the order wont be processed. No matter how well it is painted, tiny "cracks" in the paint will show at the seams between the stiles & rails of a paneled cabinet door. schreibdave noted the reasons above - expansion & contraction from humidity changes will get to you sooner or later. It does not look horrible, they are tiny hairline cracks that you would have to be ok with. Go to a showroom and take a look at the displays. Up close you will see them & notice that you had most likely not ever noticed them before. BUT...once you know about something, it may bother you. To answer your other questions, a mix or birch & mdf would not necessarily be bad. You would likely never know the difference once it was painted. It is probably a mix of cost, ease of construction & the paint / expansion qualities of the materials that determines what the cabinet maker uses. With that said - these are your cabinets, and you asked for low toxins/ VOC's. If your builder/ cabinet maker isn't working with you to assure you their methods and materials will fit your desires (or to find alternate ones that do), then I would find another professional that does. Surprisingly, factory finished cabinet lines can have a much better quality finish than "custom" built & painted on site cabinets. It is a controlled environment with less dust, etc. floating in the air. But good quality custom site built cabinets have their perks too. It all depends on the craftsman. Check out examples of their work similar to what you are looking for and see what you think. Good luck with your project!

I wish I would have found this board two months ago. I have to sign off this week. I'm already waaaaaaaay over budget so all "real wood" is likely out anyway. I would definitely like to find out more about formeldehyde free plywood or no VOC MDF. Maybe I will start a new thread. That may still be an option and less expense. He looked at me like I have two heads for not wanting MDF so I assume I will need to do all the legwork and provide a supplier. They build them in house. I found John Mansfield insulation that is formeldyhyde free but when you are sensitive, sometimes it's hard to know if you will be better or worse with what they use instead. I see a number of problems with your layout. Your aisle width is too narrow. I'm going to assume that they measured cabinet to cabinet and not counter to counter. So 42" will really be narrower. I widened the aisle to make it now 3'10" which will give you enough breathing room. The way you had it if more than one of you are working in the kitchen at the same time, it will be too tight and can be dangerous if you're at the cooktop and someone needs to get by you. This now gives enough room to walk behind or even for one to be at the island cleaning up and for you to be cooking. However that now made it a pinch point behind where the seating was. So to accommodate the difference, I made the island a bit narrower, which removed one stool. Then I flipped the ovens with the appliance storage. This also allows the food to come out of the oven and walk it around to the table or counter, without bumping into someone using the fridge to get out last minute condiments, etc. To keep your counters "even" so the cooktop looks centered, I moved the cooktop over a bit towards the fridge/freezer. All this takes away the crowded feeling in where the ovens/fridge/freezer where.

I'm much too old to think of coming out your way any more! I was out there in 1947, and did see a lot of the western states, and the attractions! Then i got married, and my wife had no interest in traveling thru the Rockies, nor seeing the Grand Canyon! (She always thought she'd have an uncontrollable urge to jump over the edge, but i told her she'd not feel much pain if she did!) So, we traveled thru the eastern half of the country!
One thing i remember about California--those people either aren't too bright, or they have a great sense of humor! We saw this sign outside a hot dog shop:

Needless to say, we lost our appetite! (But, i have a picture i took of that sign!)
And, we didn't go thru Las Vegas! Afraid my cousin Bob would get stuck there gambling, and lose all!

Jerry, We certainly don't want to see a great contributor leave us! You visit a lot of places that most of us can only dream about. Me, I'm a hiker too; have over one hundred hikes under my belt and have a hiking stick with lots of wear to prove it. I've kept a journal, so I know how many I've been on. It's fun to read back over it and reminisce about some of the things that happened on some the hikes and that just sets me on fire to go again!

As I said, we don't want to lose you, but if you must leave the forum please check in from time to time and let us know what you're up to.

Hi guys! I haven't been around much myself lately! I just logged on but just have not had time! Life has not been easy this past year but I think about everybody here. Eventually, I'll be back with my stories! In the meantime, Jerry, I would really miss your photos if you stay away!

If you do read this and never come back to post, please consider framing some of your work! It's very artistic. Also, thank you for helping my daughter with her social studies project last year!
