The osprey nest is surprisingly low - about 25 feet off the ground - so I was able to get some reasonable shots. Much higher than that would have made it very difficult since I don't climb well :) I will be going back later this week to see if I can get some more pictures. While the parents were out, I heard some activity in the nest so I suspect there's at least one little one in there. The people at the DQ where I set up my equipment were very tolerant and didn't seem to care if I stayed all day "looking at some nest." Some of the patrons seemed to think they were under surveillance and I got some very odd looks. Others knew exactly what I was doing and watched with me. It was a fun day, even if I came home with my inevitable red-head sunburn. Pat - I'll check out that site. Thanks. Maureen

I think I saw one of our ospreys yesterday. There is a nesting box on the Kingston-Rhinecliff bridge over the Hudson for them. I'm still a bit confused about what they are doing at my house. We are maybe a mile from the river, and close to a small stream, but the primary raptor food here is squirrel. Hmm, now that I think about it, there used to a couple of goldfish in that stream.

Darn, and he came up empty! Great shots!

Look at the perfect diving entry when it's going for the flounder .... wings tucked back, head and feet together, claws right in front of eyes so whatever he was looking at will hit the claws. I'd like to see that as a fish's view. The flounder catch was with a bird that was lured to the photo tank, or a captive bird. They used to hunt the fish in the decorative pond where I worked .. you'd be walking along, chatting on a lunchtime stroll on the path by the pond and suddenly this huge bird would go KERSPLASH and erupt out of the water with a fish in his talons. They cheated. The fish were used to having people scatter food, so they were attracted to people at the edge of the pond. That's where the osprey would nab them.
