Everything is dying... what do I do...

I have been nursing my babies since February. Everything is dying. Do I pull? Or nurture them as best as possible until they really die???

First, I have 32 heirlooms going in the garden in three 4 by 8 raised beds, a few pots and a couple of other odd beds.

Because of financial reasons, they weren't staked properly from the start. And I rigged and staked and bought more stakes as they needed and I could afford. Everything started dying from the bottom up about a month ago. I have gotten a ton of tomatoes from these plants. Even plants whose stems are woody and dead looking still have tomatoes ripening. Now, the garden is a mess. Got a diagnosis of verticillium wilt last month. Is it worth the effort and time to try to fight this or should I just let it be???

I am not sure what to do.

It's just tomatoes.

Take what God gives you and be thankful.

There is always next year and the adversity now will make the successes later even sweeter.

Yeah, depending on where you live - say Texas vs. Wisconsin - (which would be good to know when you post a question) that's just tomato life.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. Few people are using spot lights so what we say for lights doesn't necessarily apply to you, and nearness to windows, walls, and even the color of your furniture and carpet make a difference.

I took the haworthia out last night and put it back in it's old pot. I figured the soil would dry out easier that way. Today it's dry so I'm just not going to touch that guy for a little while. I have some of the Blue Giant leaves laying out on top of dry soil, and the Echeveria purpusorum is laying out, still with soil attached at the roots, to dry. I don't have another pot for it because there's another plant occupying it's old pot right now. The soil is dry and I'm going to put it in a new pot tonight. The color didnt get any worse over night or during the day today (it had been getting progressively worse before) so maybe it'll survive? As for the Sempervivum, I'm pretty sure he's a goner, but just in case, I plucked off all of the discolored leaves, and left the ones with a little color yet. That one is also un potted. Tonight some of the color is worse than it was last night, so I think it's done for. On a lighter note, I came home to a present on my door step today... a succulent garden! Apparently Monday after my boyfriend saw how disappointed I was, he ordered one from a florist and it was delivered today. As happy as I am, I'm scared I'm going to kill these, too! The first thing I did was look at the care sheet. It was blank. I know it had to have been expensive, so I'm going to try really hard not to kill them. Thanks for your advice guys. We live between Utica and Syracuse in a forgotten little town in upstate New York. We bought this beautiful piece of property last summer. The people we bought it from had added lots of varied landscaping over the years. Unfortunately, it seems that it will cost us a ton of money to properly maintain all of it. I wish the previous owners had not chosen to plant such a large row of Blue Spruce trees (50 of them!). I guess they were all the rage back in the late '80s. It's kind of a pity that they didn't go with Red Spruce since they are native to the area and probably less susceptible to needle cast around here. Besides the Blue Spruce needle cast disease, we have a dying Catalpa tree (verticillium wilt), dying Cottonwood tree (old age, lots of dead branches) and a large silver maple tree (next to the house) that will all probably need to come down soon. With regard to the horse chestnut seedling that retained its leaves, Ken was right in that it actually shed them once the snow finally melted here in late March. The seedling went dormant for a few weeks, and we thought it might have died. However, it actually sprouted new leaves again! Nature truly is awesome and works in mysterious ways.

it happens when the humidity is too low or not enough water. i'd suggest to tent it in plastic (can have a few holes on top) - but then do not put it in direct sun. the closed leaves will not open, leave them be, do not cut them off. the new growth will come from the bottom of the petiole of the top leaf. if it has enough humidity and moisture at the roots, it'll open up ok. you could try to tease the furled leaf very gently, but it's glued usually (so to speak). you need to spray it or wrap it in damp napkin . then it's easier to try unfurl it. it might do it on it's own. if you just try to open it forcefully most likely it'll break.

I can't tell you what to do about the verticillium. But in this time of horrific Late Blight, you can be glad that your problem doesn't affect the fruit, 'cause the people in the Northeast have dying plants too, but all their tomatoes are rotten.

What a year, huh? [I have my own problems, but too long to explain, and nothing in comparison with yours.]

first, do you think it is Verticillium Wilt? Check out the link below and see if it really is Verticillium. If it is then there is not much hope for the plants.

I found this interesting as well (the info is found in the above website):

"The pathogen is sensitive to soil moisture and temperature. Tomatoes and potatoes must have at least a day of saturated soil before infection occurs. Soil temperatures must be moderate or cool for infection to take place: 75Â° F (24Â° C) is optimum with 55Â° F (13Â° C) minimum and 86Â° F (30Â° C) maximum."

"Controls:
Long rotations (4-5 years) with nonrelated crops, well-drained soils, and soil moisture kept at the minimum for good growth are advisable."

"In greenhouses or with plastic-strip mulch, soil fumigation gives good control and is feasible on high-value crops."

"By far the most feasible and economic control is the use of Verticillium-tolerant tomato cultivars of which there are many with varying maturities and excellent horticultural qualities."
