Identify please

Hello, everyone. I've never been on this forum, but figured if anyone could help me, you could. My husband feeds the birds and we try to identify and keep a list of all birds that visit our yard.

About a month ago, a pair of birds arrived that I had never seen before. They were gone before I was able to get a picture, but I will try and describe them.

Light brown slender body, light head (my eyes aren't want they used to be and I would describe it as very light brown or grey, hubbie called it white) while it was walking in the grass, it looked like a dark brown strip down its back. I assume this was folded in wing tips or something. Possibly one of it most identifiable feature was the way they looked for food in the grass. They zigzagged through the grass together in a perfect pattern, never more than a foot apart. When I got up to get the camera, I scared them away and they haven't been back. . I could not find them in our bird book.

Any ideas?

Where do you live?

And approximately how big were the biirds compared to common birds?

I live in Indiana near Lake Michigan. The birds were about the size of a bluebird. Definitely smaller than a cardinal, more slender too. It's a little hard to describe, when we only saw them for a few minutes.

It is a cameo. Here is not a proper place to find a value for Probate. You need a letter/statement from a jeweler stating what it is and what the current value is. If you have one that actually deals in antiques rather than just current stuff they can also value it as an antique. You need that statement in writing which you may have to pay for but can use that payment as an expense to the estate. I do have one similar to this but with a lighter shell with that same metal work around it. I would be interested in when that particular type of metal work was popular.

Yes, it is definitely new construction so probably straight from the nursery - that tree isn't common or as common to see around this part of southern California, so I'm interested in how big it grows around these parts.

Milney - if you cut it back hard, it will get bushier by way of back-budding. It's your plant, so enjoy it the way you want it. Can you look into three species of sparrows- Savanna, Lincoln's and Fox? They may have been a breeding pair. I really tried to figure out just what might be feeding in the grass. If and when you find your bird, would you let us know what exactly it was?

Nerry, none of the sparrows were correct. I'm sorry I'm not that good at describing it. The head was a very distinct different color than the rest of the body. It reminded me of a red-headed woodpecker where the delineation is so sharp. The bird was also larger than the sparrows I am familiar with.
