Barn swallows' annual departure.

Although barn swallows were absent from our area the past month due to the presence of a family of hawks, I got to witness their annual gathering prior to the migration southward 4 days ago. I counted 23 on the utility wires by the time that all the stragglers had arrived. I think last year's numbers were approximately the same. I hope the little ones that fledged from our porch back in June were among them. For that matter I hope that past years' babes were part of the flock as well.

They stayed on the high wires for a few hours and then they were gone. It's so neat to see them all gathering and then departing. You can almost picture their little chirps saying "OK everybody accounted for? Are we ready? Let's fly!"

May good luck follow them until their return.

It's hard to imagine those tiny little wings carrying them hundreds of miles across so many state lines, although not as remarkable as contemplating the migration of tiny hummingbirds (who seem to be with us still.)
