Maine Primitive Camping - Anyone have ideas?

Hi folks. We're driving up to Maine (from FL) mid-July. Got a small fishing boat and kayaks. We're starting out on Lake Nahmakanta around Millinocket and then Parlin Pond near Jackman. Now I need to fill out the remaining 1 1/2 weeks. We really enjoy wilderness camping. Hubby wants to camp on water and fish, I want to see wildlife and do some exploring. Backpacking is out, unfortunately, so it's either car or boat camping. I'm really getting concerned we'll have problems getting sites. The ones that sound really good all seem to be taken, even the reservable boat camping sites. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have looked at Scraggly Lake, Richardson Lake and Lake Umbagog right by the NH border). Has anyone been there?

Finally, hubby wants to spend a few days on the shore. Should I go to Acadia Natl Park and try for their campgrounds? I so hate having to listen to RV's, though. I looked at Mount Desert Campground, but their waterfront sites require a weekly reservation (besides being $45 a day-Wow!).

Any and all help is appreciated.

I work at South Arm Campground on the Richardson Lakes. I know that there are sites available depending on the dates you are talking about! It is a beautiful wilderness area and the highlight of my summer is spending a week out at one of the remote sites!

Mt Desert Campground is very nice even off the water!

What a coincidence! I had decided to give them a call today. It'll be sometime in the week of July 25. I'm concerned I'll only be able to get the boat campsites that are really far from the put-in. I'm pregnant (2nd trimester, so there shouldn't be any issues), so I don't want to be more than a couple of miles away. Tell me, is this a heavily used lake, meaning watersports and such?

If watering is the only issue, try mixing some of those water-absorbing crystals in with the soil when you plant. They soak up lots of water and release it slowly so your plants can go without wtering for a longer period of time. Can't remember the name of them, but almost any garden supply center will carry them. My personal preferences would be pansies for the north side and maybe portulaca (which likes a drier soil) for the east, but adding those water crystals will really increase your options.

Not that anyone cares (thump thump thump - is this thing on?!) but I just talked to one of the company's reps and she said it's not non-stick but rather powder-coated black. Which is bad enough (gross) but at least it just gets cooked to death then just kinda disappears over time as the whole thing gets blackened/seasoned over time. Or so I'm telling myself. Non-stick would be truly ridiculous...

I'm not sure what you mean by water filtration faucet. Any faucet can be a filtration faucet by connecting a filter to the cold side. Why don't you call Waterstone customer service and ask about the filter systems for their faucets. Caveat. Filtering the water that you use mostly for washing and not for drinking is not generally a good idea.

My girlfriend grew up in Maine and lives there every summer. Twice now we have taken sea kayaks out for extended trips on Mooshead Lake (last time 4 days). There are VERY nice primitive campsites every few miles along the shore. All have a picnic table and pit toliet. They are first come, first serve. We have always gone during the week in Sept and never had a problem finding a campsite. I don't know what it might be like in the middle of the summer.

This last time we went to Acadia and while it is a must see place, even in Sept it was pretty crowded.

Maine is a great place! Enjoy!

Another nice campground that is right on the water on Southport Island. Its near the Boothbay Harbor region. Its called Greys Homestead
