LP gas on Pop-Up

Anyone have a problem with their gas flow - My Pop-Up has a furnace and a two burner stove that operate from the 20# cyclinder of LP gas affixxed to the front of the Pop-Up . It was all working very well a few weeks ago and I tried both the furnance and both burners on the stove over the Memorial Day weekend and they all light but cannot be turned to a high flame .

The tank I had on had fuel but I changed it to a exchange that was full and the problem still is there .

Any ideas ????????????? Cold and need to cook inside . dannyjw@hotmail.com

Danny - sounds to me like the flow of the L/P from the tank to the appliances has become restricted. You might first check to make sure you have the tank and line connected correct and secure (and no crimp in the connecting hose?). Check the line coming from the regulator (located right there on the front of the camper) to the appliances to see that did not get bumped and crimped in any area. Last but not least is the L/P regulator itself; these need to be checked out every so often (like maybe annually) to make sure they are performing adequately. My Starcraft popup owner's manual says the correct line pressure for the regulator should be eleven (11) inces of water column pressure. Most L/P gas suppliers have the equipment to check this for you. Hope this might help a little.

Check for a mud wasp egg in the hose. Those nasty critters will lay an egg in there, cover it with "mud" and you'll scratch yer head until its raw, trying to figure out what is wrong.
All it takes is for you to unhook the hose, go to get the tank refilled, or exchanged, and the leetle wasp will go in there and lay its egg!

The older style LP tanks do use an internal left handed thread. The new tanks all have the "OPD" (overfill protection device) and they also have an external right handed "worm" type thread. You have two options: get an adapter at Walmart for about $10.00 or, check the date on the old LP tank you have, if it is twelve years or older, then when you have it refilled they will require you to have it re-certified. It is probably cheaper for you in the long run just to do a tank exchange for about $16-$18 bucks. That way you are good for another twelve years. As far as your question about running the bbq on NG, it won't work without a conversion. LP gas is at a much greater pressure than NG so, consequently the orifices are smaller for LP than NG. You can check with Aussie and see if they offer an NG conversion kit. If not, you can attempt to drill out the orifices by hand. There are some places on this discussion board as well as others on the net that talk about how to do this. If you do that, you can also get a 12' Natural Gas hose with a quick disconnect on the end that would fit (maybe without an adapter) on your existing stub from your house and the bbq. I just picked one up from Home Depot. It was made by Char Broil in the accessory area. In either case good luck and happy grilling. bsbbq

Thanks for the quick response. After posting my initial message, I called my local gas company and explained what I had done. They told me that I needed to remove the regulator on the grill. They cited the reason as the regulator that is currently on the large Prop. tank will regulate the flow of gas to the grill. They mentioned that if I left the regulator on the grill, that the flow of gas would be less than needed to operate the grill correctly. Does this sound like it is correct to you? I converted my Bluestar Rangetop myself. Prizer-Painter sent me the parts. It took about an hour to make the changes then adjust the shutters and low flame. Now that I know what I'm doing it would be a 15 minute job.

I've cut A few up for various reasons over the years but I like to wash them out with Dawn dish soap and let them sit open to the atmosphere for a few months before I cut them. I like to use a Sawsall to cut them as I have less grinding to do and the chance of sparks is greatly reduced. If A torch is used A few pounds of dry ice put into the tank will drive out any oxygen. Put the dry ice in the tank and leave it in for A few hours (this gives you a chance to check on your health and life insurance) I don't like the exhaust gas trick as if your vehicle is running rich you might be putting gasoline vapor into the tank and this would not be good. At the vary least fill the tank to the cut line with water before you cut it. The best bet is to use a new tank from Tractor Supply or the like. I don't think they cost that much (50 bucks?) and it's A damn site safer! Good Luck! H.R. PS: This is only my experence,Your results may vary.

Could be same thing that happened with my gas grill. On another forum, I read that the newer regulators have a check ball to ensure tanks do not discharge quickly should the hose break. If you turn on the tank too quickly, the ball slams to the regulator and can stick there restricting the flow. Don't know if thats correct, but since I've started turning mine on slowly, the problem has not reocurred.
