Dark Day at Flat Rock ...

Had to have my old black lab, Molly, put down today. She was an old dog, turned 16 last March, and I wanted her to die in her sleep on the front porch. But that's not the way it went, she turned sick a couple of nights ago and would not eat; and she went down fast. When I took her to the vet and he looked her over, he said "this is the time". Guess I knew that was the way it was going to be, but she went to sleep with her head in my hands. And I buried her in the back of our property, overlooking a salt marsh which has a little creek running down through the middle of it.

Without a doubt she was the best dog I've ever had.

I am SO sorry about Molly, there is nothing I can say to ease your pain. Just know she loved you and cherish the memories. It will take time to heal your heart.

I don't know what your apologies are for Maggie , but you have the makings of a wonderful sculpture garden bordering on the edge of your forest. ( what a site ! ) Are there any basic concepts or principles to keep in mind? Should there be a clear space between the sculpture and any shrubs or plants? In the sculptural medium, just about anything will go. So I am not sure if there are any specific principles to adhere to. There is of course the 'site' in with your large piece should respond to. But this ' responsiveness' can be interpeted in many ways and from many different sculptors viewpoints. Tony gave you a good link and you may also enjoy researching some of these other stone artisans works such as Andy Goldsworthy and Isamu Noguchi. Your site reminds me of the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln Massachusetts. The DeCordova ( one of my most favorite places on earth ) has an absolutely beautiful natural forest that has various clearings with in the property where large sculptural pieces have been placed. If you do a google search you can access it. You might find it inspiring. I look forward to your progress post !

Mike, I got Daybreaker about 2 years ago. It has bloomed constantly since its first season. It does not have any blackspot, the foliage is tiny and shiny. The only problem I have with it is that the blooms are never like the ones in the catalogue. They're tiny and not anything like the dark yellow they're supposed to be, they're a pale cream here with no shading whatsoever. I almost got rid of it but finally last autumn (March 2009) the plant did produce those gorgeous blooms. I was very pleased with it but again later that spring (Oct 2009) onwards I've had the same tiny unimpressive flowers. Hopefully it's autumn flowers will be more beautiful (heaps of buds right now). Perhaps it needs to be established. As I said, the flower production is great. Since this rose is very highly regarded by most people, I'm thinking it's just not settled in yet or perhaps doesn't like the dry hot conditions here. I would be interested to know how you go with yours (if you have the same problem). Hopefully it'll do great for you. Cheers, Sanju

Having a day to "accomplish nothing" can be quite an accomplishment! Enjoy your day. I've been flat-on-my-back (or rather, upright-in-the-recliner, gasping-for-breath) sick since Feb. 12. Today is the first day I've felt like there is hope! I was actually hungry; my ribs are not hurting so much, and I can breath. Life is good. Three bouts of antibiotics, some steroids, which I hate to take, and various breathing aids have had very little effect on this terrible bug until now. I'm accomplishing nothing, either; except checking our the KT and watching the birds at the feeders.

Dale, I am so sorry. I know what you are feeling. I was absolutely heartbroken when I had to put my Katie down this past September. September 10th to be exact and like your Molly I was with her until the end. We were preparing all week and had the vet come to our house to do it. Like you I was praying she would pass in her sleep. Once again, I am very sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you. You did the right thing for Molly.

it's one of life's hardest things to do, they are such great companions. I feel badly for you, I know exactly what you're going through.

Sounds like she's in a gorgeous place now....

Sorry to hear about your loss. Losing a good dog is a rough bump in the road. More tears have been shed around my house over losing a good dog than for a lot of people. Remember all the good times and trips you had together. The only thing that helps is time.

Thanks, everyone, for the kind posts; they were much appreciated.

Think I'll grab the fly rod, hitch-up the little popup camper and head-up for the hills for a few days. Will give a trip report when I get back.
