Looking for a good cot.

Looking for suggestions on which cot to buy.

My wife and I are tent campers. We recently ditched our inflatable queen-sized mattress in favor of individual cots. They work well because they provide a lot of storage area underneath plus it's a heck of a lot easier to sit off the ground in order to change clothes or shoes. The problem is that I'm a big guy... 6'2" 220lbs and my cot is too small for me... width wise. I have to lay on my back and interlock my hands on top of my stomach so they dont dangle off the sides. When laying on my side, half of my body is off the cot or resting uncomfortably on the cot frame.

Has anyone found a cot that is comfy to sleep on that might handle a bigger guy?

Hello there... I just purchased the Cabela's Outfitter XL Cot. I am 6'3" and much heavier than you and the Cabela's cot is rated at 500# and is 85" long by 40" wide and 19" off the ground. I will be using it this weekend for 4 days on our first trip of the season. I will let you know how it worked out when I get back!

I have a friend who I work with in a campground. She tent camps the entire summer and uses a large cot with a mattress from Cabelas. She said it was worth the money and very comfortable.

I know that for many of you, the white centers grow beautifully. So do the white margins. However, those are the ones I have the most difficulty growing. Every now and then an exception, for a couple of weeks maybe, then downhill from there. So I got Patriot and Minuteman before I knew they would not do much here. I got Ann Kulpa. I got White Elephant and Eskimo Pie. Surprisingly, White Elephant (a 2011 purchase) does fine before it turns green about mid June. I lost my 2010 purchase Eskimo Pie, it dwindled to nothing, and I consoled myself with Hudson Bay. It is doing nicely. So are Pathfinder and its offspring Half & Half. Where I find solace is with the golds, and the greens--which includes all the blues which turn to green. When blue wax does not WASH off, but melts instead, the leaves wind up glossy and fairly smooth. You'd have a hard time identifying some of mine which you'd recognize if they were blue and matte finished.

There are a lot of good suggestions above re good to grow varieties. Here are a few I would add. Lyuda's Mom's Red Ukrainian, Druzba, and Burgundy Traveller. Eva Purple Ball is excellent as mentioned above. Re tomatoes growing in the heat, higher temps improve tomato flavor in every way you can imagine. But STRESS reduces flavor much faster. Most complaints about heat should really be talking about stress. In high temps with full sunlight, the plant has maximum photosynthetic ability and produces the highest level of plant sugars and other flavor compounds. If the plant is stressed by lack of water, disease pressure, pests, nematodes, etc. there will be a significant reduction of flavor potential. So my rule of thumb is to keep plants healthy and un-stressed to get the best flavored tomatoes possible. Heat is not a problem for a healthy plant. DarJones

I think you need something a bit bulkier. My wife and I use a 60 x 80" Cabela's folding frame double wide cot. Instead of the standard air mattress that is made for it we use a 1/4 sheet of plywood, cut to fit, with a custom cut 5" foam mattress on top. You can buy the frame without the air mattress. We're not big air mattress fans. Top the whole thing off with a goose down tick and your favorite double wide sleeping bag and you'll be extremely comfortable. We used this last season for some pretty long stretches with good results. I would take a look at this frame from Cabelas and see if it might work for you.

Well just returned from 4 nights at Rocky Mountain National Park, and have to say that the cots were the best camping purchase we have made in a long time. They are huge when set up and not practical for an "overnighter" but for extended stays they are definitely worth it.

Good deal. I may try that style. I'm a little worried about the legs ripping through the tent's floor matierial.

I also have Cabelas Outfitter XL and highly recommend it.

Also for the bigger person, check out Cabela's "TravelChair Antarctic Chair". Made with stainless steel tubing, $50, and rated at 400 lbs!! It is very hard to find a folding camp chair rated over 250 lbs.

Didnt have any problems with the cot legs snagging the tent floor, we use a tarp under the tent and a smaller tarp inside to make clean up a little easier...

Forget it. Just saw it listed on the Cabelas website... 42" x 9" x 7"
