Looking for quality bbq-type lighter

You know those cheap disposable lighters with the handle and long stem that are good for lighting grills and lanterns, candles?

I'm looking for quality one that will last more than a weekend and is obviously refillable. Any suggestions?

Paper plates and napkins should be disposable, lighters should not.

I use those and always have them for about a month at least before they run out of fuel. All the dollar stores sell them now. I don't know of any that you can refuel.

I don't know if it is any good, but I've usually been pleased with Brookstone products, and they have a refillable one for $10.

You asked ..... I don't like it because it's expensive, too water retentive out of the bag, and moves quickly along the path to collapse. I wouldn't add grass clippings because they break down quickly, compromising drainage and aeration, especially in out-of-the-bag peat-based soils, and as well, cause considerable N immobilization. ... but if you feel you're getting good results, why change anything? I would point out though, that a very high % of those reading the soil threads are nerds (tongue in cheek) & like to talk about soils, or have come here seeking solutions to the problems they encounter(ed) while they were using soils/mixes like you describe. Agree with both Sey and Daniel. "They've used kingsford lots before and last few years its some kind of wood charcoal. I will check out the link." Unfortunately, even if we were expert recyclers of grill and pit ashes I think you don't have enough information, since you really don't know the current composition of the soil. The link with the ingredients just included "borax" as part of the formula and "sodium nitrate". Borax is used for mold release so the briquets look nice and cute without breaking. It also moderates the heat intensity as an insulator so the briquets last longer. Sodium nitrate is the common flammable/explosive product in old style black powder and it is in there to assist in lighting the fire (lol because the borax retards the fire, no surprise) Borax in tiny pinch quantities is a source of boron, a necessary nutrient for most if not all plants, including tomatoes. It becomes toxic if it accumulates and easily could kill the plants. The sodium nitrate contains sodium which plants likely also use in minute quantities, but in higher amounts it stresses plants. If the ashes have been there a long time, these chemicals can be all leached into the water table and cause aquatic problems too, but leave your ex-pit garden spot cleansed of them. As far as the coal in the briquets, I'm on Sey's team about not wanting it, no way, but honestly as a science geek I don't think it would kill the plants if you amended the soil. There is a lot blowing around my local park and but gradually in trace amounts ...not a pit BBQ. I don't know and I'm not sure anyone could tell us what heavy metals could be present in the impurities in any lot of coal. That said, you don't eat your hostas but I eat 4 pounds of tomatoes a day when the growing is good. If in recent years it has been lump charcoal (the Royal Oaks type of stuff I'm thinking without checking) If you build on top I suspect you'd be OK. It is a natural part of the renewal of forest ecosystems that the underbrush gets charred and leaves a layer of soot, and that nurtures the next renewed ecological cycle. So try to be even handed when you read all the scare mongering on the Internet. The uncomfortable part is not knowing specifically what parameters Kingsford worries about saying don't use the ashes as a fertilizer. Otherwise if a lot of rain passed through your old pit in the intervening years I'd actually be encouraging you. Cheers PC

Well I'm pretty opinionated on this, but here goes: Charcoal and a covered grill - this is the only way to go. You probably already have a gas range, another isn't really needed. However, charcoal is completely different, whether you use it very hot or very cool. When doing something like a roast chicken, set it to about 500-550 and only cook 45 min. On a gas grill this would incinerate the food, however, because the charcoal burns off most of the oxygen, the chicken won't burn up. Incidentally, that's what causes the "smoke ring", lack of oxygen. Be a little careful opening the top to check, sometimes the air coming in will flash the tips of the wings into flame. For a whole turkey do it about 450 with some foil over the leg ends, it takes about 12 min/pound and IMNSHO it's better than deep fried. Thin crust pizza takes 6 minutes at 600F and is unmatched. (Watch this like a hawk). For slow cooking, there's nothing like a mild smoky very low fire, about 225. I do whole pork shoulders and briskets (only use packer cuts) and cook them overnight, about 14 hours. As for brands, the ceramic ones like Big Green Egg are great. But the larger Webers for grilling and the Weber Smoky Mountain for BBQ are also excellent. Don't get too small a grill though, it's nice to have lots of space for a two level fire, very hot for searing, cool for cooking. Be sure to get a BBQ Guru (thebbqguru.com) for temperature control, and a good instant read thermometer like Thermopen because things happen fast. Look around for a source of good lump charcoal. I like People's Woods and Wicked Good Charcoal, but depending on where you are there are a lot of others. Lump is much better than briquettes because it leaves less ash, burns hotter and doesn't put off tastes into the food. The two I mentioned also light very quickly if you use a plumber's torch and actually the grill gets up to cooking temp faster than our oven. With lump you don't have to wait for the entire surface of the charcoal to be burning, just light it and once the temp in the grill gets up, start cooking. Don't try that with briquettes, they give off bad flavored smoke until fully lit.

The Olympian GM-10 is a pretty good lighter. They are refillable and you can replace the battery. Around $20 at large RV supply stores.

Gosh, jeeperaz, all I use is the one you have described! Namely, the Scripto, which I think was somewhere around $4.95 - ususally one will last me AT LEAST one full season. Do believe the one I'm on now is in the second season. Use it for lighting the camper stove (inside) and the outside Coleman stove, plus the two gas lanterns.

Now, I know how this sounds, like real trite, but I'm sure you've noticed the little lever on the top that adjusts how much flame comes out? Remeber when I was first using these lighters I did'nt realize there was this adjustment and was about ready to chuck the thing into the trash when I discovered that little lever - what a difference!

I forgot to add that not of them work real well if they get the least bit damp. Even the expensive ones.

Damp is not an issue here in Arizona. I've noticed that the extreme temps we have here will kill the cheapy lighters. If I leave one of the lighters in the garage or out in the sun for an extended period it seems like it almost expands the gas and they either leak completely empty or when you do light them you have a raging torch in your hands.... regardless of hi - lo setting.

You just gave me a thought. I have a fireplace lighter, it came with the fireplace set we received as a gift about 20 years ago. It is brass plated, about 18" long and "turns on" when the cap is pulled off. There is a small chain on the end which holds an extra flint. It also has a red velour case.

Anyway, we left the house that had the fireplace almost 10 years ago, so I will use for grill or camper. Funny thing is, I have not refilled this lighter - ever. Pretty freaky!

Tonight I found the type of lighter I was looking for. It's actually made by Coleman. See link below:

The InfiniteLite long-neck lighter works well for me. It has a flexible neck that is about 16", so I use it for my grill and to light other things around my house.
