Looking for quality bbq-type lighter

You know those cheap disposable lighters with the handle and long stem that are good for lighting grills and lanterns, candles?

I'm looking for quality one that will last more than a weekend and is obviously refillable. Any suggestions?

Paper plates and napkins should be disposable, lighters should not.

I use those and always have them for about a month at least before they run out of fuel. All the dollar stores sell them now. I don't know of any that you can refuel.

I don't know if it is any good, but I've usually been pleased with Brookstone products, and they have a refillable one for $10.

Agree with both Sey and Daniel. "They've used kingsford lots before and last few years its some kind of wood charcoal. I will check out the link." Unfortunately, even if we were expert recyclers of grill and pit ashes I think you don't have enough information, since you really don't know the current composition of the soil. The link with the ingredients just included "borax" as part of the formula and "sodium nitrate". Borax is used for mold release so the briquets look nice and cute without breaking. It also moderates the heat intensity as an insulator so the briquets last longer. Sodium nitrate is the common flammable/explosive product in old style black powder and it is in there to assist in lighting the fire (lol because the borax retards the fire, no surprise) Borax in tiny pinch quantities is a source of boron, a necessary nutrient for most if not all plants, including tomatoes. It becomes toxic if it accumulates and easily could kill the plants. The sodium nitrate contains sodium which plants likely also use in minute quantities, but in higher amounts it stresses plants. If the ashes have been there a long time, these chemicals can be all leached into the water table and cause aquatic problems too, but leave your ex-pit garden spot cleansed of them. As far as the coal in the briquets, I'm on Sey's team about not wanting it, no way, but honestly as a science geek I don't think it would kill the plants if you amended the soil. There is a lot blowing around my local park and but gradually in trace amounts ...not a pit BBQ. I don't know and I'm not sure anyone could tell us what heavy metals could be present in the impurities in any lot of coal. That said, you don't eat your hostas but I eat 4 pounds of tomatoes a day when the growing is good. If in recent years it has been lump charcoal (the Royal Oaks type of stuff I'm thinking without checking) If you build on top I suspect you'd be OK. It is a natural part of the renewal of forest ecosystems that the underbrush gets charred and leaves a layer of soot, and that nurtures the next renewed ecological cycle. So try to be even handed when you read all the scare mongering on the Internet. The uncomfortable part is not knowing specifically what parameters Kingsford worries about saying don't use the ashes as a fertilizer. Otherwise if a lot of rain passed through your old pit in the intervening years I'd actually be encouraging you. Cheers PC

I'm happy with my Weber Summit Silver bought about 6 years ago. This model has 4 burners arranged left-to-right, by the way. Performance is good - my only gripe is that the separate side burner to the right of the grill isn't very adjustable (though I rarely need it for anything). While I could probably get choosey and find a more perfect grill, I would first look at Weber's higher-end because I'm thrilled with Weber's customer support. While performing way-overdue maintenance, I called them to order some replacement parts for items that had understandably worn out or corroded over time... They sent me replacements at no charge. No questions about warranty periods or anything like that. I called them intending to purchase parts, but it seemed they volunteered to replace them on the assumption that Weber products are designed to last forever. So I'm a loyal customer of Weber's. We live not far from the pacific ocean, the grill is outside, uncovered and facing the sea, and we use it 2-3 times a week year-round. No complaints.

Vinogirl, Heart Pine. I'm torn here because I've gone to houses and seen it finished on-site. I've also seen UA's Pine as well as Crescent Hardwood's Pine in the natural and Amber (darker) finish. Stunning. I know it will be slightly softer than oak but that's part of the character of heart pine. And heart pine is harder than regular pine. But it's not cheap. They do have engineered with relatively no sheen. Both the UA and Crescent Hardwood were 7" planks. I've gone to a fantastic local flooring place with my photos. The guy that's helping me pulled out the heart pine engineered as well as a beautiful brazilian walnut floor that was a bit less and much much harder. The third choice I liked that he pulled for me was Mannington Marrakech Hickory in a med/deep stain. My goal is to have a floor with character but something that won't overpower the space and that helps the space feel comfortable. I was happy with these three over everything I saw. Then I saw the site finished reclaimed heart pine and my heart stopped a little. If we only had unlimited funds!!

All such good advice above, but i think it's time to experiment. (it can be fun) Creating your own 'home brew' bbq sauce. I make a big batch and freeze. In pints labeled 1,2,and 3. Our system and we know what it means... And a good time to seasonally make bbq sauce with such good produce. We stem off and quarter a dozen big ripe tomatoes...no fuss needed seeding or skins removed. An big onion quartered and a head of garlic cloves. A few peppers sweet and spicy...roast in the oven on a parchment lined sheet pan for an hour at 350. Turn off the oven and let them cool down and get ready to grind. Sit in the oven for an hour or cool on the stove top. (can be roasted on your grill on thick foil lined with parchment) Blend in cuisinart or blender a 1/4 of your roasted and dump in a sauce pan and add some vinegar, 1/4 cup. Just simmer for 30 min. Thats #1. pour off into a container. Then grind another batch with more spice, maybe a dry rub spice mix...no need to get fussy about buying specific ingredients...use what you have on hand and no need to wash out your cuisinart or blender...just make a different flavored batch.... For our #3 bbq i add more spice and fresh herbs. Cilantro, chives, basil etc. More heat like smoked chipotle. When we hit the freezer in November, we know exactly what we are heating up and can add a half a guinness or more vinegar or some rhubarb or maple syrup...but the base 'savory' sauce is consistently the same. Had amazing soup dumplings in China town last night but the sauces on the bbq duck and all the meats at the table were sweet and thick like gummy bear sauce. Not a fan of sweet and thick. I still have a few baby pints of rhubarb bbq sauce i made in the early spring and need to make another big batch for the winter season....

The Olympian GM-10 is a pretty good lighter. They are refillable and you can replace the battery. Around $20 at large RV supply stores.

Gosh, jeeperaz, all I use is the one you have described! Namely, the Scripto, which I think was somewhere around $4.95 - ususally one will last me AT LEAST one full season. Do believe the one I'm on now is in the second season. Use it for lighting the camper stove (inside) and the outside Coleman stove, plus the two gas lanterns.

Now, I know how this sounds, like real trite, but I'm sure you've noticed the little lever on the top that adjusts how much flame comes out? Remeber when I was first using these lighters I did'nt realize there was this adjustment and was about ready to chuck the thing into the trash when I discovered that little lever - what a difference!

I forgot to add that not of them work real well if they get the least bit damp. Even the expensive ones.

Damp is not an issue here in Arizona. I've noticed that the extreme temps we have here will kill the cheapy lighters. If I leave one of the lighters in the garage or out in the sun for an extended period it seems like it almost expands the gas and they either leak completely empty or when you do light them you have a raging torch in your hands.... regardless of hi - lo setting.

You just gave me a thought. I have a fireplace lighter, it came with the fireplace set we received as a gift about 20 years ago. It is brass plated, about 18" long and "turns on" when the cap is pulled off. There is a small chain on the end which holds an extra flint. It also has a red velour case.

Anyway, we left the house that had the fireplace almost 10 years ago, so I will use for grill or camper. Funny thing is, I have not refilled this lighter - ever. Pretty freaky!

Tonight I found the type of lighter I was looking for. It's actually made by Coleman. See link below:

The InfiniteLite long-neck lighter works well for me. It has a flexible neck that is about 16", so I use it for my grill and to light other things around my house.
