Camp Kitchen Setup

Any ideas for a kitchen setup? I usually have a camp table with a shelf below, the water jugs and dishpan to catch excess, then a box full of kitchen goodies next to it, then the cooler. Somehow I still need more space to prepare food, etc. And I don't like the sink set up at all!

Any ideas out there? Pictures would be great too!

To be honest I tend to use the provided picnic table for most things requiring a lot of space. When I'm set up for the season, which to me doesn't feel like camping, I do have a table which has a small rack with plates, cups, silverware, utensils, paper towels, cutting board, etc. Under the table I keep all of my cast iron cookware. It makes it easy to get whatever we need to set a table and eat. Then I have a rack type thing for the stove which has room for spices and potholders. I have a large rubbermaid container for nonperishable foods. Sorry, no photos right now.

Rusty - I don't think it's any big deal so long as your not selling them and that's pretty much what you said for anyone wanting a copy. I got a copy of the Boy Scout plans for a "patrol box" and that was the stipulation going with those free plans, too; they were not to be sold commerically. I got my copy 8/6/03 and it referenced a guy by the name of Bob Myers. Gave his email address, too; and like I emailed you, I sent Bob an inquirey as to who orginated those plans. Got the email back saying 'ole Bob has an block on his email address ... if he don't know ya, he ain't accepting an emails from ya! The site address for the Boy Scout plans I posted on the other thread are open for anyone who wants to copy them. It was my understanding from my friend who got me the site plans in the first place, he said that was orginated for the Boy Scouts and they are open for anyone so long as they don't sell or commericalize them. This is how we started out, with a banquet table on the other side holding microwave, toaster oven and induction plate. We bought a laundry sink and hooked it up in the kitchen. I washed dishes (mostly pots and pans and silverware) and loaded them into a plastic bin with holes drilled in the bottom for draining. Easy to take back into the dining room to put away. We were out of our kitchen for 9 months. By the end, I had rearranged the whole makeshift kitchen several times to accommodate electric and fridge and also probably mostly because nothing ever felt quite right so I tried different configuratiosn. The “pantry” holding the microwave was the best change. We had trouble using the appliances because any 2 at the same time would trip a breaker. Go figure...the circuit on the dining room wasn’t intended to hold a whole kitchen worth of small appliances. The microwave on the opposite wall got plugged in in the living room. We used a lot of paper plates, we spent a fortune eating out, and we eventually got an instant pot, which was more portable, and plugged it in the kitchen after the electric was finished. And OMG was I so happy when I was finally able to paint those walls around 18 months after we started demo! Oh. And we never ate at the table. It just took up space or was used for prep. We ate in the living room.

At least 6 inches above the canopy. You could also get some stand up arm lamps at Walmart and face then towards the center and side of your trees. They will be very happy. I use 'LED' because they cost less in the long run and run cool. 100 watt daylight ones. Take a look at the Cabelas Kitchen unit the one that costs about a $100. We have use one for 3-4 seasons. The quaility is not real good and I have had to make some repairs to the fastners that hold the thing together. It packs down pretty small when you consider the assembled size. It will take up a good bit of storage/packing space. It packs down to 40" long x 24" high x 12" wide and with comes with a zippered storage bag. Also, most important my wife said that she like it.

REI has a cool one for sale, although I am sure it is WAY overpriced. If I knew how to do a link I would do it, but you could easily find it on their website. It folds up all nice and neat.

Yah, that REI one is really steep! Oh, and just a note...I bought the Kitchen Campmate from LL Bean and sent it back. It was so big and bulky and really didn't add any value.

I guess the best way to go is use the plastic bins and tables. Thanks for the replies. If I figure something better out, I'll post.

We've been camping for a few years now, and just got a tent trailer last June. I thought I'd use the inside kitchen area, but don't because it's too small and I just don't want to get anything wet in there. So I added a fold-up camp kitchen (Cabela, I think) and now it's set up outside the trailer for cooking/cleaning. So far, so good. Plenty of room for prepping, cooking, and cleaning. Love the u-shape layout with plenty of table surface. Now I just need to organize the food storage better!
