I love seeing Cedar Waxwings and was able to get a few photos this week. They were feeding on Serviceberry trees.

Thanks again everybody, ...we love to share our birds here. :) Carol23- We shoot hand-held (in Manual mode) with 3 Canon compact superzooms... an S3-IS, an S5-IS, and an SX30-IS. These are similar, inexpensive cameras and photographing wildlife of any kind with them can be challenging. Good shot dante- idk how to 'add' people or what you mean, but nice pics! Deanine thanks! I just got a new camera with a better zoom to it- I was looking at dslr's but, the weight with the additional lens on it- due to an injury I have w my arm, I couldn't shoot w it, so- back to point n shoots for now til/if I get better. I have a Canon powershot sx40, and also a Sony d-700 (or something like that idk lol) I love them both, you can find a good camera on craigslist believe it or not~ Just always ask HOW MANY photos they've taken with it, once it gets up over 1000-2000 they lose their sharp/crispness in the pics.

I keep stopping by this thread to see the wonderful photos of the adult tenderly caring for the irresistible babies - but all those gaping mouths caused a small problem for me. I had a dentist appointment soon after viewing the pics and I started thinking of what we look like to a dentist, with our mouths wide open. Do they ever get the urge to drop a worm in our mouths? I'm afraid I'll never go to a dentist again without thinking about this. Great photos though. Claire

I've been hibernating but spring seems to be sneaking in. We might have 6 bluebirds and have seen one standing guard on each of two bluebird boxes so I hope they will nest although we've always had bluebirds so they nest in the wild someplace close by. Yesterday a cardinal appeared and will probably be the only time we see a cardinal this year. Our feeders never measure up. I've heard of people putting out shelled seeds and mealy worms but a local birder said I shouldn't put out mealy worms because birds are supposed to find their own worms. Two red-winged blackbirds have also arrived and are spending time at the feeders and pecking at the suet. We won't see them in the yard later on when they move to the marshy area and sing from the cattails. I've seen one rusty capped sparrow but we might have more. Mourning doves and, of course, jays are around. Also a hawk but we haven't seen it close enough to identify. The other bird behavior we saw for the first time but the local birder said was quite common was at least 4 birds going into a bluebird box during a snowstorm. We also think the sparrows will take shelter under our small front porch. About two days ago the deer started coming out of the woods. There's not much snow in the fields anymore. Last night I only saw one but the afternoon before, my husband counted 8. Our neighbor farmer curses their fondness for his clover in the hayfield. I, too, appreciate the photos and Claire's maintenance. It's so nice to see what's happening around New England. I'm just north of Concord and west of NHBabs.

Nice pics of a beautiful bird. I wish my Serviceberry berries looked like that. Think it got Cedar rust (from the Cedar tree nearby). :(

They are feeding on Amelanchier (serviceberry). If you are not familiar with them, they are used as an ornamental garden plant featuring showy white flowers and nice fall color. The fruit is edible and taste like a blueberry. They are mostly pest free. Birds love them and they come in tree form or shrub.

Yep a shot of my smallest of (3) Amelanchier grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance' which hasn't produced fruit yet. Also Asclepias syriaca (milkweed) blooming. Photo this morning.

P.s. Ever wonder how the name Serviceberry came along? It has nothing at all to do with birds... Serviceberry is noted (especially you Konrad) way up north in zones such as 3 as being the tree that let the locals know way back when as it came into bloom -- that the ground had thawed (up to 8-9-10 feet beneath) and this signal was for folks that had passed thru the winter that, that the ground could now be dug to proceed with funeral arrangements. So, there's the folklore behind the tree. And ya all were thinking they were for the birds birds- :)

Ok..thanks, I should have known, the berries are not ready I supose, here, they're called Saskatoons, looks a bit differant in the leafs, they're rounder on the ends.

These are growing wild on my property.

great picture i also will post some picture the waxwing love also eating mullberries for 4 days there were over 50 in the tree then it rained and now ever not and then i see a few in the tree
