I love seeing Cedar Waxwings and was able to get a few photos this week. They were feeding on Serviceberry trees.

Sorry to post so late to this topic. I just found this place and created an ID just to answer this LOL. It is definately a mullberry tree. I am assuming the berries are white and look a little like strawberries? I have one and I get tons os Cedar Waxwings as well as Baltimoe Orioles and Robins. They eat the fruit until it is completely gone. The Mullberry tree is considered a weed to most but I love my tree. It is right near my porch and I spend a couple of hours every day watching the birds enjoying the fruit. The only downfall is that the berries fall off the tree and can make a mess. To me it is worth the inconvenience though. Mullberry is a favorite for many birds and if you have one in your yard the birds will be there from morning to night.

I usually see them in the fall when they come back through. They flock to the ligustrum trees and eat the berries. I loving seeing them. They are such happy active little birds. Linda, when I was a kid I remember birds eating China berries that had fallen from my grandmothers tree. She'd laugh because they would stagger around drunk afterwards as the berries were somewhat fermented. Maybe the fermenting process destroys some of the poison. I just now looked up 'drunk birds' on line. As well as speaking to the subject of 'drunks' the article says birds can eat without harm poison seeds that would kill other creatures. Yes she did! It seems they stick around for several weeks/month until flock disperses for breeding,.. still lots of Crab Apples, Mountain Ash, High bush Cranberry, Chokecherries, Russian Olive etc. around, they might even pick off new buds on trees. Only had ones a nest in the backyard around 25 years ago in a little spruce trees about 4 foot up, now that tree is HUGE. Have never seen the Cedars here in winter, they soon will be returning and I will see usually several nest out on the hobby farm, [above pictures] planted several hundred spruce trees from seeds. Hardly ever see Bohemian nest,..I'll have to ask them where they go.

Thanks again everybody, ...we love to share our birds here. :) Carol23- We shoot hand-held (in Manual mode) with 3 Canon compact superzooms... an S3-IS, an S5-IS, and an SX30-IS. These are similar, inexpensive cameras and photographing wildlife of any kind with them can be challenging. Nice pics of a beautiful bird. I wish my Serviceberry berries looked like that. Think it got Cedar rust (from the Cedar tree nearby). :(

They are feeding on Amelanchier (serviceberry). If you are not familiar with them, they are used as an ornamental garden plant featuring showy white flowers and nice fall color. The fruit is edible and taste like a blueberry. They are mostly pest free. Birds love them and they come in tree form or shrub.

Yep a shot of my smallest of (3) Amelanchier grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance' which hasn't produced fruit yet. Also Asclepias syriaca (milkweed) blooming. Photo this morning.

P.s. Ever wonder how the name Serviceberry came along? It has nothing at all to do with birds... Serviceberry is noted (especially you Konrad) way up north in zones such as 3 as being the tree that let the locals know way back when as it came into bloom -- that the ground had thawed (up to 8-9-10 feet beneath) and this signal was for folks that had passed thru the winter that, that the ground could now be dug to proceed with funeral arrangements. So, there's the folklore behind the tree. And ya all were thinking they were for the birds birds- :)

Ok..thanks, I should have known, the berries are not ready I supose, here, they're called Saskatoons, looks a bit differant in the leafs, they're rounder on the ends.

These are growing wild on my property.

great picture i also will post some picture the waxwing love also eating mullberries for 4 days there were over 50 in the tree then it rained and now ever not and then i see a few in the tree
