Take your book and burn it - with your kids

I found a great little book and a novel idea when I went fishing in Muskoka with the kids. It's a book (about 25 pages long) with neat little stories. They are family freindly. I love the feeling of sitting by the fire and telling stories, I actually memorised some of them so I could add some excitment.

The great thing is that it is an ebook- so I printed it and took it with. I recommend this to anyone with kids. When youre done with it just chuck it into the fire.

You can always reprint it for the next trip.

I love taking books with me, and usually they are John Muir or Jack London or another wildlife writer. Im not certain why you would throw the "book" in the fire, and not share it with another camper you might run into or repack it and take it back home with you for your next trip. Seems like a waste of paper.
The idea of taking books and sharing them totally appeals to me. I usually get books at the library sales, just recently when camping I met a coule who just purchase a new teardrop camper, they did not have any ooks, and when their son was down for his nap, they said they weer wanting a book, so I finished my used library book on Hillary's Everest climb. They both came by just before leaving and thanked me for the book. I asked them to either pass it along or keep it in their teardrop for their next camping experience, when they can share it with another camper.

I love reading when camping! It is one of my joys of camping to take a bunch of books and then choose which one to read when I feel like it! I have two books called "Campfire stories" that are really good! they are not internet books but regular books! I keep them and would not burn them! Some really good stories for all ages in those books. I agree passing books is a good thing. It is one of the things I love most about being an avid reader!

I haven't read the book, so I can't comment on whether it's good overall, but all I was thinking when reading this post is that the budget in question wasn't drawn very well. Insurance and routine vet bills (yearly exams, shots, and a sick visit or two) are predictable expenses that should be included in one's budget. People often make budgets that are based almost solely on their regular monthly expenses (mortgage/rent, utilities, food, etc.) and don't go any further. They don't include entirely predictable but non-monthly expenses like insurance and property taxes, and they don't include items that are inevitable but not predictable as to timing and exact amount, such as home and car maintenance, home decorating, gifts, dining, medical deductibles and co-payments, entertainment, vacation, clothing, and so on. I think that's where the expense tracking comes in. After tracking expenses for several years (hopefully using a computer program like Quicken, which makes this *so* much easier!), you can make a budget that's actually realistic. You'll know that if you're not setting aside $XXX per month, you won't have enough to cover it if, for example, the water heater bursts or the front stairs collapse. I do agree that it's important to examine purchases to see whether they're worth their weight, but if you only track expenses and never have a comprehensive budget, you'll never know it when you inadvertently let your expenses slide too high.

Fun, did you have more than one living space growing up? We had a formal living room and a family room so the family room is where our toys were kept. However, we didn't have nearly the same amount of toys as kids do nowadays! The way our family room was laid out, there was a corner where all the toys were kept. I shared an average size room with my sister, so we didn't have much room for playing in there. I'm sure we did a bit but for the most part, we were in the family room when we were young or outside. I also can't imagine having kids' toys in every room. That would drive me nuts! Most of the houses around here have basements or more than one living area so the basements store the bulk of the toys and then the family room, which is typically open to or next to the kitchen is where the main floor toys are stashed. Having four kids has relaxed my anal tendencies but I still go a little nuts with crap laying around. The peninsula in my kitchen becomes the drop zone but I can't stand having that clutter. And dh is the worst b/c he will leave his stuff there and never come back for it but then get annoyed if I move it or ask him to. He's used to clutter from his childhood. I used to have complete order in the house b/f I went to bed, but now I'm so exhausted by then that I have slacked off a bit and then get all stressed when I come downstairs the next morning to clutter and have to clean up b/f I can function. I'm like that with cooking too - I can't start cooking unless the counters are clear, no dirty dishes out, etc. DH looks at me like I have two heads. Am I the only weird one like that? Oops, sorry, I have a habit off going off on a tangent!

Sigh, the only gift card I received was from my brother for Home Depot - and he put it in a three dimensional maze I had to solve before I could get to it. come to think of it they do have lots of gardening and how-to books. I only gave books to a teenage first cousin, once removed. He has started reading science fiction so I gave him two Heinleins -- Red Planet, a juvenile, and The Door into Summer which the grandfather he never knew loaned to me when I was a kid. And Bester's The Stars My Destination which is currently my "best science fiction book ever written." We will see how he likes the classics. Woodnymph, sorry to say L'Engle's Certain Women has been completely forgotten by me except for the title -- and that is probably from seeing it on the shelf. Rosefolly, I'd love that Edith Head book myself. I remember reading a fascinating bio of her decades ago. Have I ever mentioned to you that the dvd of Double Indemnity has some extras about the costume design. Apparently Stanwyck had a broad behind that Head had to design for. Who knew?

The dentist that I had when I was young worked without an assistant most of the time. One did not have a hygienist. In both practices if he needed assistance the person at the front desk would come in and do it. But that was a simpler time and neither one of them dealt with insurance or had huge incomes or overhead. When I was in school, there was one main switchboard, and several of the departments had direct numbers. A student took over main switch board when she ate her lunch. She also passed out paychecks and pay stubs. There was one secretary receptionist in each department. There was two people in clinic management. There were three or four people who worked in the insurance office, with one interacting with the students. There is now a call center. There are three to four front desk peoplewho also answer phones as well as a coordinator in each clinic. There are layers and layers and layers of administrative staff that never existed when I was in school. There are probably 200 people doing the job of two dozen. The class size has not increased. The patient pool has not increased. Tuition of course has gone through the roof. Everything is much more complex than it used to be. When I first worked at the practice I have been at for 20 years the owner had an assistant and a front desk person and a part time hygienist. The current owner has two and a half assistants, almost two hygienists, a front desk person and there should be two, and there is a technology person who is not an employee but is probably there for several hours every month. Again, I am not sure that the patient population has increased dramatically.

I have lurked here for a while. I love camping & reading. Used to go to the library old book sales. Now like the original poster, I have an e-book and I love it! Mine holds well over 100 books so I have a variety to choose from.

You can read without the camper lights on (or lantern) so less bugs are attracted when you read outside at night.
