Help me find perfect New England waterfront campsite!

I'm looking for a place where I can tent camp alongside my car. My primary requirement is that my campsite be truly waterfront (fresh or salt), so I can step out of my tent and put my kayak in the water whenever I like, without having to put it on the car and haul it to a boat launch, or drag it half a mile.

The campground will also have hot showers, toilets, and a place to purchase firewood and ice. It will permit alcohol and fires. Each campsite would be reasonably private. There would be a place to swim, and no power boating allowed.

Ideally (but not a requirement) it would be more adult-oriented than family-oriented. Quiet hours would start fairly late. I don't care about organized activities, games or crafts. I don't care if pets are allowed.

We camped several times at Hammonasset State Park in Conn.
The park was close to the beach, just a dune away. Seemed to be well kept. Had all the amenities we needed. Had no trouble getting a camp site! Although, one time was just before July 4th weekend. We had to leave on Friday, as our site was reserved for another party. The guy, after he heard me and our son playing music at the trailer, invited us to stay for the weekend, but we thanked him and left! Just watch out for the skunks--there are some there! Mighty friendly critters--will play in yer tent when you leave!

Hi Eileen_boston, I saw your reply under the Kayak thread and saw you have a 17' Perception poly kayak. Have you ever heard of Old Quarry, which is in Stonington, ME. It is an awesome place to kayak, it is on the ocean about 5 miles from Isle au Haut which is part of Acadia National Park. Anyway, a bunch of friends and I did some kayaking off there 2 years ago, it is a fabulous little campsite with great paddling opportunities.

It is car camping although if you're lucky to get a permit to Isle Au Haut, you can kayak tour there or if you're a MITA member, there are islands in the Stonington archepelago to camp at. Lots of little islands to explore as the area has a lot of history with quarrying (hence the name...).

Anyway, I can't really answer your questions about the quiet hours or stuff but you can ask them about it:

A few tips from a northern horticulturist now living south of Santee. 1. Soil is sand with very little nutrition and high in phosphorus. Do not use fertilizers high in phosphorus. 2. You will find that many plants grow best in high shade or morning sun, afternoon shade. 3. Epsom salts will be your best friend. It is magnesium which is necessary for plant absorption of iron. Don't be afraid to scatter it around plants. 4. Sandy soils are best amended by placing compost/manures on soil surface under pine needle mulch. Don't dig them in. Compost everything you can get your hands on. You will need it. 5. Winter gardening is fabulous here. Prowl the growers on St. John's Island near Charleston for plants and advice. Spring bulbs should be purchased when they come on the market in the fall, refrigerated until Jan. 1, then planted. Carleton is the best daffodil to grow here and is one of the few that will rebloom every year. Be certain to attend the hidden garden tours in Charleston for great ideas. 6. Careful selection of disease free rose varieties and many of the old shrub rose varieties will prove to be valuable garden additions. 7. Study on-line catalogs such as Plants Delight and Singing Spring Nursery for helpful tips. Best to buy plants rated for Zone 8b-9 to grow in this area. Be prepared to say goodbye to many of your favorite plants and be ready to learn about many new ones. Also, you will find far fewer insect and disease problems here. No Japanese beetles! Fire ants...yes. Numerous northern annuals are perennial here. You will have an enjoyable learning curve and quickly adapt to gardening in this area.

Two more historic sites that (I think) haven't been mentioned: Greenfield Village in central Massachusetts, somewhat north of Sturbridge Village, is an "original" setting -- all the old homes are original to the site, not brought in. The earliest date back to the original European settlement of the area. I've only been there in the dead of winter and on a short time budget, but had a wonderful time and plan to go back. Canterbury Shaker Village, north of Concord, NH -- if you haven't (and even if you have) visited a Shaker village before, it is well worth the trip. The buildings are fascinating, the guides give you insight into the Shaker way of life, and you can even try out some of the crafts -- rugmaking, Shaker box making, etc.

The thing that I noticed on the dormers that bothers me a little is that the cornice line at the roof does not wrap onto the sides as in Kendrah's photos. I think they may also be a little too close to the main roof's eaves, but that will likely be a minor comment once it is all done. Otherwise I think their overall size is about right. What color will this house and trim be painted? That will make some difference. I think right now the round windows are standing out so much for everyone because they are the only thing with white trim. In either case, I would advise to finish the portico, get the shutters on, and get the painting done before making any drastic changes.

New exterior door or add a storm door in New England?

@Jane, sorry, but I have lived in MA all my life. Storm doors are not necessary if you have a thermal front door. Actually, a storm over a thermal can be dangerous, particularly if the front of the house faces south. The heat that builds up between the doors can, for instance, start a fire, as it did with my neighbor's Christmas wreath. A storm door will not keep the cold out with the old wood, ill-fitting door. Then there is the ugly storm door, over a perfectly nice front door. Then there is a full view white storm door, over a red front door. You want a picture frame? Our first house, 1911, had a gorgeous wood front door, in perfect condition, no storm, because the older houses in New England often had an air lock entry, before stepping into the foyer.

This is the best place in the world and meets most of your requirements! However, I am a bit biased in that I work at this campground! Howwever, I wouldn't have taken a job there if it wasn't such a great place! It has everything you want except that powerboats are allowed! However, there are 17 miles of basically undeveloped lake to they are really not a nuisance to anybody!

Cobscook Bay State Park in Downeast Maine is one suggestion.

Or, a park you can only get to by kayak, Warren Island State Park (sorry, don't know how to post two working links)
